Overview

Reporting to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will oversee the delivery of revenue, profit and clinical trial services. This includes formulation of operational delivery strategy, oversight of the day-to-day operations of Clinical Research and implementation of resourcing strategies to ensure efficient use of resources in support of profitable delivery of clinical trial services. In conjunction with other members of the C-suite, oversees operational policies, processes, initiatives and goals, and provides visionary leadership for the execution of long- and short-term strategic plans and directives that promote the company as a global leader. The role will be expected to participate in key decisions as a member of the executive management team, building excellent working relationships with the key management personnel and other external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Partnership:

  • As part of the executive team, participate with the Board of Directors in the ongoing development and evolution of the strategic plan ensuring this plan and the delivery of programs and services remain aligned with the company direction.
  • Forecast, develop and oversee implementation of service operational infrastructure plans that will support long-term performance and growth goals.
  • In partnership with the Executive Leadership team participate in planning and execution of expansions, acquisitions and organizational alliances.
  • In conjunction with other senior operational and innovation leaders identify and prioritize potential innovations and opportunities (operational, structural, technology or service) and develop relationships to provide a pipeline for the future.
  • Related to above, identify potential clinical solution growth opportunities that may involve the acquisition of intellectual property, products, companies with products, or companies.
  • Provide sound analysis of proposed acquisitions and divestment or restructuring of assets or businesses. Represent the organization as the executive member on Sponsor governance committees.
  • Together with all executives, ensure all parts of the company are acting in alignment with our purpose and demonstrating high ethics and integrity, and where there are questions or uncertainty related to this, work with the CEO to resolve.

Operational Planning and Execution:

  • Motivate and guide a high-performance management team, ensuring people, processes and systems are in place to support the delivery of quality clinical trial services that support organizational health.
  • Provide operational oversight and support related to clinical study management, regulatory affairs, clinical safety, data sciences, clinical operations.
  • Collaborate with the head of quality assurance during sponsor and regulatory audits to ensure oversight and escalation of quality measures required as a result of sponsor and/or regulatory inspection findings.
  • Drive quality and continuous improvement by assisting clinical solutions leaders to define, plan and execute process improvement initiatives and key performance indicator definitions and metrics.
  • Align, leverage and further develop service capabilities to maximize revenue generating opportunities.
  • Support the identification and utilization of internal/external resources and infrastructure to ensure organizational goals and targets are met.
  • Advise on the service delivery implications of management decisions, initiating improvements where relevant.
  • Support clinical research leadership in securing new clients/projects and delivering customer satisfaction throughout the clinical trial lifecycle.

Financial and Risk Management:

  • Ensure the achievement of the annual profit, revenue and sales targets.
  • Oversee the annual budget process for the clinical research division, supporting leaders by providing sound guidance/best practice advice..
  • Participate in evaluation of monthly and quarterly result review meetings in preparation for reporting of financial results to the Board of Directors and Finance and Audit committee.
  • Collaborate with finance leadership in developing and implementing policies and processes to ensure a rigorous and disciplined approach to financial project management including regular review of costing tools, cash positive milestone/unit schedules and project level recognition methodology.
  • Provide input related to major capital purchases or leases.
  • In support of the CFO participate in managing and monitoring the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF) and plans.
  • Assess business risk related to contracts and quality and provide teams with guidance and direction when required. Ensure there are reliable quality systems and controls in place related to clinical services and employees in order to comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain relations with external partners (Regulators, Sponsors, key vendors) and when needed, lead the investigations into any findings and advise on and support recommendations.

Leadership and Team Engagement:

  • Interview, hire, onboard and train new leadership staff as appropriate.
  • Supervise, mentor, provide leadership and maintain positive team morale; facilitate conflict resolution acting as a role model.
  • Oversee the development of direct reports by setting and tracking individual objectives, key results and priorities to support department and company strategies and objectives and by providing stretch projects.
  • Evaluate training needs and conduct performance reviews for direct reports.

Qualifications

  • (Honors) Bachelor’s degree (MSc. and/or professional designation preferred) and 15+ years of related experience.
  • Successful track record in international leadership roles within the clinical research setting.
  • Management experience in both a pharmaceutical/biotech and CRO setting.
  • Experience overseeing financial project management.
  • Experience overseeing QA function may be a future asset.
  • Demonstrated senior level negotiation experience including acquisitions.
  • Demonstrated and very strong oral and written communication skills.
