Public Works Water & Wastewater Maintenance Technician

Position: Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Lead Hand of Maintenance, this position is responsible for performing the maintenance and repair of Municipal infrastructure related to the day-to-day operations of the Water & Wastewater unit. This position will be responsible for data collection on various asset management projects related to Water/Wastewater infrastructure. The Maintenance Technician will be accountable for all duties related to the upkeep of all fire hydrants, and additional municipal assets.

The Public Works Water & Wastewater Maintenance Technician will frequently travel to and from sites throughout the Municipality, work in a variety of weather conditions and respond to emergency situations outside of regular working hours, as required. This role requires a commitment to teamwork, achieving excellence in safety, and quality performance through continuous development.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist and support the maintenance and repair of the Municipal Water & Wastewater facilities. This includes, but is not limited to, all equipment in pump/lift stations.
  • Provide support with the scheduled maintenance and repair of the Municipal Infrastructure related to water and wastewater.
  • Participate in and complete daily pre-work job assessments & toolbox talks.
  • Perform emergency repairs as required to relevant Municipal infrastructure.
  • Perform residential water hook ups & shut offs, as required.
  • Maintain all municipally owned pumps, stand-pipes and water wells.
  • Complete inventory checks on parts and tools.
  • Maintain courteous and positive public relations with residents of the community, representatives of organizations and visitors by delivering quality service.
  • Assist with emergency repairs, as required, to Municipal infrastructure, as required.
  • Maintain the inventory of all equipment/tools that are on site while loading and unloading of trucks and trailers.
  • Operate heavy equipment, as required.
  • Adhere to federal & provincial legislation and regulations.
  • Conduct and attend safety, operational and training meetings as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

SAFETY:

  • Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness.
  • Report to the Lead Hand of Maintenance and Director of Public Works, all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.
  • Report to the Lead Hand of Maintenance and Director of Public Works, any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.
  • Report to the Lead Hand of Maintenance and Director of Public Works, all Occupational Health & Safety related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.
  • Report all near-misses and incidents to the Director of Public Works immediately.
  • Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) or Completion of post-secondary education.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Certification related to the following trades are not required, but would be considered an asset: Millwright, Pipefitting, Electrical, Mechanics or Post-Secondary training in a related trade.
  • Class 3 Driver’s license with Air Brakes would be considered an asset.
  • WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and First Aid Training.
  • Working from Heights and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) training considered an asset.
  • Experience with the maintenance and repair of pump/lift stations.
  • Experience with flushing, maintaining and repairing fire hydrants.
  • Knowledge of water meter repair & installation, as well as, the process of the water utility.
  • Working knowledge of requirements of the NS Motor Vehicle Act and the National Safety Code including, but not limited to, daily trip inspections, reporting of defects and abnormalities, drivers log book and road side inspections.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment, as well as, independently.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instruction and maintain records as assigned.
