EDW's Economist is a critical position within the organization, responsible for managing a multi-faceted economic analysis program. Reporting to the Director of Market Research & Market Intelligence, this role will support EDW’s efforts to drive economic growth through business retention and expansion, investment attraction, destination marketing, and more. EDW’s Economist is responsible for conducting important analysis to highlight Winnipeg’s advantages and economic opportunities to enable decision making for clients and customers throughout all EDW’s key markets.

This position produces critical reports for EDW, its partners and Winnipeg prospects, which include insights on a variety of financial, political, and socioeconomic topics, as well as EDW’s strategic performance. As a key member of the Market Intelligence team, the Economist will develop economic models based on the analysis of multi-faceted data and be responsible for communicating complex economic data to non-technical audiences. As EDW’s resident expert on Winnipeg’s economy, the Economist is responsible for publishing regular reports and insights publicly and establish their presence in Winnipeg’s economic development community.

Economic Development Winnipeg (EDW), through its Market Intelligence team, is looking for an engaged, creative and data-driven economics professional interested in making a meaningful impact in our community. Conduct comprehensive economic impact assessments to evaluate the effects and implications of various projects, to support the work of the business and tourism teams in serving their clients.
Liaise with counterparts with the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba Government and other partners organizations to ensure EDW’s economic analysis methodology maintains alignment with key stakeholders.
Identify and recommend data from reliable sources to support internal analytical projects, programs and plans through the production and dissemination of qualitative industry intelligence.
Collect and analyze a wide range of financial, political, and socioeconomic data to support research efforts.
Conduct in-depth analyses to identify trends, patterns, and key insights on Winnipeg’s economy, strategic industry sectors.
Analyze the potential economic benefits and costs associated with initiatives, which could include both internal projects or external economic development opportunities.
Synthesize data findings into actionable intelligence that supports strategic objectives.
Present data and findings in clear, accessible formats tailored to different audiences.
Develop well-structured presentations, technical reports, and non-technical summaries.
Support EDW’s teams and executives by providing them with synthesized insights about Winnipeg’s economy, including its strategic industry sectors.
Contribute to publications that share key insights and analysis with the wider community, including at partner events and through media if/when the need arises.
Engage with stakeholders through the dissemination of research findings and publications.
Foster community understanding by translating data into relevant and meaningful narratives.

Familiarity with statistical and econometric modeling techniques.
Data-driven with an aptitude for organizing information to support strategic decisions.
Experience navigating, querying and interpreting statistical data sources (ie. Ability to translate complex economic data into accessible reports for non-technical audiences.
Interest in publishing and sharing insights with the Winnipeg business and tourism community.
Strong presentation skills and ability to leverage data in planning and decision making.
Collaborative with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships internally and within the community.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
 
Bachelor's degree in economics, Finance, or a related field is required.
~5+ years of experience as an economist for an economic development agency, or related industry experience is an asset.
~ Familiarity with the economic landscape of Winnipeg and the surrounding region is considered an asset.
~ Experience in a policy or regulatory environment is a plus.
