The Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing is dedicated to working with municipalities to build healthy, vibrant, and safe communities throughout Nova Scotia. Join our team as a Municipal Engineer, where you'll work closely with our Senior Engineer and report directly to the Manager of Municipal Infrastructure. Your expertise and technical know-how will play a crucial role in driving forward innovative solutions and ensuring the seamless operation of municipal engineering projects.
You will collaborate closely with our Senior Engineer, playing a vital role in overseeing the progress of municipal infrastructure projects. You'll be at the forefront of evaluating project applications and ensuring that approved initiatives adhere to funding agreements.
This role offers a unique chance to contribute to both internal and external projects, providing valuable engineering support to municipal units and non-governmental organizations alike. You’ll have the exciting opportunity to conduct site visits across Nova Scotia and gain firsthand insight into the intricacies of municipal infrastructure planning, construction, and maintenance.
Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to sit on various multistakeholder committees, driving discussions on key topics central to municipal engineering and making meaningful contributions to the wider community.
You have completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree (specializing in Civil or Environmental Engineering). You must be eligible for registration with Engineers Nova Scotia as an Engineer ‐ in ‐ Training or Professional Engineer.
Ideally, you are a generalist and have, or are able to gain, knowledge in the principles and practices of municipal engineering and project management in both rural and urban settings. Areas of practice that will be considered assets include the following: pollution abatement; water supply, distribution and wastewater collection and treatment systems; solid waste management; You have a high level of proficiency in the use of standard computer-based database management and spreadsheet software, including the ability to design and produce standard and customized technical reports. You are highly motivated, and work well as a team player as well as independently on projects. You can present technical information clearly and succinctly. Knowledge of provincial environmental regulations, provincial procurement policy, the Municipal Government Act, public transportation policy, and experience in municipal capacity building, including asset management for municipal infrastructure, are also considered assets.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
