Our Brucejack operation is now recruiting for a Site Sustainability Manager with a competitive base salary between $176,800 to $221,000 dependent on experience, skills, and competencies with consideration to internal equity with an additional short-term incentive of 30%.

Health, Safety, Environment and Social performance play an integral role in maintaining social acceptance, continuing to maintain ESG leadership and support continuity of our operations. Newmont aims to address global and industry challenges with its a long term, transparent vision for sustainable mining. This role is essential in implementing strategic objectives, standards, systems and processes for environmental and social performance management at the site level. 

Operational Leadership has accountability to develop and execute site-specific environmental and social performance plans to solve problems at the local level in order to retain their social license to operate and meet sustainability objectives and targets. Critical to the success of the S&S function is clarity of the work of the roles and authorities at Enterprise, BU and assets and collaboration with other functions. Draw upon enterprise and site level resources to achieve purpose.

Sustainability throughout the role describes work associated with environmental management and social performance. The Sustainability Manager is responsible for leading the S&ER function at Newmont’s Brucejack Mine. The Sustainability Manager provides leadership, guidance, and support in execution of Brucejack’s Sustainability & External Relations strategy.

The purpose of this role is to execute site specific plans that align with objectives, standards, systems and processes for environmental management and social performance essential to manage risks while ensuring site compliance, performance requirements, KPIs/metrics and targets.

The successful candidate will perform the following duties with safety being the number one priority:

  • Execute site-specific plans that embed sustainability standards, processes/tools, KPIs, metrics, objectives and targets.
  • Coordinate and participate in compliance, assurance and governance activities associated with sustainability at the site level.
  • Leads development and implementation of environmental and community engagement systems to ensure ESG performance
  • Complete required regulatory reporting, community engagements, complaints/grievances and associated tracking to meet commitments and requirements.
  • Identify and oversee the development of site level (day-to-day) operating permits to meet site level project, exploration and brownfield project needs coordinating with BU and corporate SMEs.
  • Coordinate with Technical Services and operations on environmental and social aspects of tailings, water, closure, waste management, processing and other operational activities to ensure compliance with regulatory, community and internal commitments and requirements.
  • Proactively manage site environmental and social risks, ensuring development of and compliance to adequate controls
  • Manage stakeholder relationships at site level (local government, communities, local NGO’s)
  • Support risk and performance reviews at the site level to identify gaps and action plans, that address performance improvements and ensure these are tracked in relevant Newmont management system(s).
  • Routinely interface with site workforce, senior leaders within the business, and maintain relationships with governmental, regulatory agency personnel, and community leaders
  • Complete event classifications, investigations and development of actions.
  • Complete site level implementation of sustainability critical controls and verifications.
  • Coordinate and support sustainability systems and compliance for environmental and social management systems including LOD1 and LO2 audits and actions.
  • Work in coordination with other functional teams to meet operational needs, maintain objectives and coordination of events and emergencies as needed.
  • Coordinate and enter site level data for sustainability reporting, e.g., Annual Sustainability Report and Climate Report.
  • Complete required internal and regulatory monitoring and ensure systems are in place for sustainability functional areas (i.e., water quality, air/dust, community perception surveys).
  • Work with mine planning to complete updates of closure plans. Complete annual data update for closure planning, progressive reclamation and cost estimating.
  • Work in collaboration with environmental and social performance BU and corporate leaders to implement synergies to improve environmental and social management at the site level which manage risk and improve performance.
  • Engage with local regulators, NGOs, communities and partners regarding commitments, complaints/grievances and requirements.
  • Ensure socio-economic knowledge base is current, accurate and included in business decision-making.
  • Support lessons learned for events, implementing and tracking developed actions.
  • Support sites in meeting the requirements for the variance processes working with Corporate SMEs on required data and reports.
  • Support site level review of risks and actions related to compliance, environmental management and social performance.
  • Lead engagement with the site leadership team on sustainability including progress to targets, permits, risk and performance issues. 
  • Develop site environmental and social performance objectives and targets consistent with Newmont’s ESG objectives.
  • Lead efforts to deliver on ESG objectives and track progress against targets.
  • Develop and manage relationships with environmental regulators, governmental agencies, and First Nation stakeholders.
  • Represent Newmont in negotiations with various regulatory and community stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits, community MoUs, and social agreements.
  • Develop and execute an environmental management and community relations strategy supportive of Brucejack’s business.
  • Develop and manage complex environmental plans including engagement with regulatory agencies related to air, water, waste rock and biodiversity to ensure Red Brucejack’s viability.

About You:

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in the extractives or heavy industry sectors.
  • Bachelor or master’s level qualifications in Environmental science/ management, international relations, political science or social science, or other relevant degrees.
  • Knowledge of legislation and standards in different regulatory settings, permitting, monitoring and management of performance for environment, and social performance.
  • Mining and processing operations associated sustainability risks and management systems.
  • Project Management and team management and building capacity fundamentals.
  • Understanding and experience in external engagement with communities, external bodies, and regulatory authorities.
  • Understanding and technical expertise in sustainability management (in mining preferred)
  • Knowledge of mining industry and operations
  • Knowledge of British Columbia and Federal environmental regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Experience with ArcGIS, MonitorPro and Enablon an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong experience in community & government dialogue and negotiations.
  • Be able to work in a fly in, fly out camp setting
