Responsibilities:
Being part of the Health, Safety and Security Department (HSS) reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, Cannabis Ops, the Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for facilitating compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations and guidelines. Their main goal will be to advise and support operations to always ensure a safe working environment to prevent injuries and accidents from happening. The HS Advisor will work with the two facilities, located in British Columbia., to promote a positive safety culture by reviewing, maintaining, and improving the Health, Safety and Security program in collaboration with the local Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) members. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the individual will take ownership in advising and supporting of everything that is safety related, including but not limited to assessing and implementing safety protocols, reviewing policies and procedures, handling all Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and WorkSafeBC related matters from end to end, and being an active member of committees and teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Program Management: Oversee the safety program, ensuring compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Policy Development: Develop and implement Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policies and procedures that employees will follow to ensure workplace safety.
- Incident and Injury Management: Handle incident reporting, investigation, and follow-up, including managing injury claims with WorkSafeBC and supporting employees through the return-to-work process.
- Training and Orientation: Conduct safety orientations for new hires (both temporary and full-time), and manage safety training programs, such as first aid, forklift operations, and WHMIS certification.
- Inspections and Audits: Conduct regular facility inspections and audits to ensure safety compliance, identifying potential hazards, and taking corrective action where necessary.
- Committee Involvement: Lead the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) and participate in the monthly Supervisor and Safety Leadership meetings to enhance safety practices.
- Documentation and Reporting: Prepare safety reports and track safety performance metrics, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of safety incidents, inspections, and regulatory audits.
- Emergency Response Plan: Oversee the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility’s Emergency Response Plan, including leading safety drills and emergency preparedness activities.
- Safety Supplies Management: Manage safety supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensuring adequate stock and proper distribution.
Qualifications:
- Education: University certificate or diploma in Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) or Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) programs.
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a health and safety role, with recent experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
- Certifications: Working towards or willing to pursue NCSO/MO or CRSP designation; First Aid certification is considered an asset.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of OH&S legislation and regulatory requirements, particularly WorkSafeBC.
- Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to manage time and priorities effectively; proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
- Other Requirements: Experience managing WorkSafeBC claims and handling occupational hygiene issues is considered an asset. The successful candidate must pass background checks.

Working Conditions:
This role requires flexibility to attend different shifts (morning, afternoon, and night) to interact with employees and ensure safety protocols are followed. Occasional travel between the two British Columbia facilities is expected.
