BACKGROUND
The Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support, known as Threads of Life, is a national charity dedicated to supporting families along their journey of healing following a workplace fatality, life-altering injury, or occupational disease. While offering support to family members, injury prevention is promoted. Threads of Life has seen significant growth both in the family members supported and community partners across Canada. We are the charity of choice for occupational health and safety events. Threads of Life is accredited through the Imagine Canada Standards program and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The team is friendly, inclusive, dedicated and knows they are making a difference in the lives of Canadians. This is a national, work-from-home position, from anywhere in Canada. Candidates must be able to flex hours to accommodate the program needs of family members and partners in different time zones with a focus on meetings in Eastern Standard Time.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day programming and operations of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director plans, directs and coordinates all functions including human resources management, fiscal management, volunteer and donor development and outreach. Supporting the organization’s vision, mission, and values, the Executive Director provides leadership and is responsible for conducting the strategic plan and the annual business plan.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Builds relationships with volunteers, funders, partners and other stakeholders to further Threads of Life’s vision and goals.
2. Develops a sustainable membership structure that supports a national representative body.
3. Secures funding streams to ensure the sustainability of the Threads of Life programs.
4. Acts as ambassador and spokesperson for Threads of Life.
5. Establishes a regular communication link between management and board of directors and works with the chair to coordinate meetings, reports, and support.
6. Regularly reviews the current strategic plan to ensure that objectives are relevant and that the work of the team members is in alignment with the appropriate objectives.
7. Achieves outlined deliverables in an efficient, cost-effective, and timely manner.
8. Ensures financial accountability by developing annual budgets, reviewing regular financial reports, and reporting to the board of directors.
9. Establishes/modifies policies to reflect appropriate legislation and business approaches as defined within the strategic and business plans.
10. Manages the overall operations of Threads of Life including its staff.
11. Supports staff members and builds the Threads of Life team by encouraging professional development, conducting regular staff meetings, and implementing a system of regular performance reviews.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a non-profit leadership position including experience working closely with a board of directors.
Well-developed empathy and ability to deal with sensitive information and family members in crisis.
Exceptional relationship-building experience with volunteers, business leaders, board members and stakeholders.
Proven strong leadership and management skills to coach, mentor and inspire a staff and volunteer team to achieve organizational goals.
Demonstrated familiarity in stewarding and securing major and planned grants and gifts.
Excellent communication skills in oral and written English, and French language skill is considered an asset.
Confident public speaker with the ability to engage donors, volunteers, and partner organizations.
High level of personal initiative, setting and achieving challenging goals.
Team player, resourceful and organized.
Strong administration and computer skills (Microsoft Office, Contact database, fundraising software).
Ability to work flexible hours, lead a national virtual team, and travel within Canada.
