NovoPower is developing waste-heat-to-power systems to bring data centres, electrolyzers and other energy intensive industries into the circular economy, saving them money and reducing their GHG emissions. Our beachhead market focus is liquid-cooled data centres.

The position

NovoPower is expanding its engineering team, looking for experienced engineers with a passion for cleantech and sustainability. Our product development path calls upon expertise in refrigeration, machine design, electric power generation, hydraulics and controls.


We are seeking a thermal engineer with strong theoretical and practical experience in the design of Organic Rankine Cycle or refrigeration systems.


You will be responsible for the design, fabrication and testing of the thermal components of our commercial prototypes and our initial product offering. You will report to and work closely with the Chief Innovation Officer to ensure that the product meets performance objectives and customer requirements, and that the development process respects budgets and timelines.


You will be comfortable sourcing components, solutions and services, and solving problems of all types. Experimentation, data analysis, iteration and innovation are essential elements of this position. Documentation of innovation and IP creation is an essential part of the position.


You are well organized, and used to keeping detailed records.


This position is based at NovoPower’s offices and workshop in Montreal, with opportunities for occasional remote work as circumstances permit.


About you

You should be passionate about innovation and energy efficiency. You should have at least 5 years’ experience and thorough mastery of thermal engineering (design of refrigeration and/or ORC systems) from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Experience in machine design is also expected.


Good familiarity with the following fields is a plus:

·      Fluid power engineering;

·      Control systems engineering;

·      Electrical engineering (synchronous generators and VFDs); and

·      Process engineering (control systems and HMI).


You have strong organizational and management skills, and experience in managing experimentation and product development. You are naturally organized, and have experience developing and managing engineering documentation systems.


Key Skills: 

  • 5+ years experience in thermal engineering
  • Strong skills in Matlab and SolidWorks
  • Experience in sizing brazed plate heat exchangers
  • A self-starter, collaborator and team player. 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Adaptive working style suitable to working in a fast-paced environment

Your responsibilities


·      Work with CIO to determine work plan and budgets;

·      Design, implement and test all thermal components of NovoPower system;

·      Work closely with an academic team at Concordia, as well as NovoPower’s technical advisors;

·      Design, document and report on product development process; and

·      Prepare innovation reports and contribute to patent applications, when appropriate.
