About the opportunity:

The Director of Environment and Energy is responsible for developing, implementing and directing environmental and energy programs and processes to ensure best management practices, compliance with laws and regulations, risk management, process efficiency and establishment of the highest standards. The Director also monitors performance and costs associated with E&E practices.



The attributes we are looking for:

  • Develop E&E short- and long-term strategic plans. Provide advice to senior management with respect to emerging trends, challenges and solutions in the areas of environment and energy, technological developments, and best practices.
  • Support implementation of Environmental management system based on continuous improvement (as ISO 14001) in compliance with the Group Standard.
  • Assist environmental management and control of plants in terms of potable water consumption, storm water, wastewater, spill prevention, waste management, air emissions and environmental noise.
  • Assist energy management and control of plants in terms of Scope 1 and 2 GHG emission, thermal energy usage, electricity and utilities usage.
  • Direct the development and monitoring of performance indicators to ensure all facilities meet or exceed company’s objectives, procedures, and programs.
  • Identify and anticipate Environmental risks, and hazards in the organization’s operations and establish guidelines for protection from the hazards.
  • Provide active leadership with the Industrial Manager to define and implement CapEx related to environment and energy. Additionally, measures should be in accordance with The Company’s group requirements as well as any federal or provincial regulations and requirements.
  • Develop and implement audit tools (such as ISO standard). Direct activities related to completion of audits performed by E&E managers at both corporate and facility level and partner with management teams in all areas of the business to ensure standards are met, taking corrective action as required to close any gaps. Partner with management team and Human Resources to address all training needs. Investigate major and minor accidents or problem areas and recommend future preventive measures.
  • Develop and monitor the department operating budget and take corrective actions when unfavorable deviations arise, and action is required.
  • Act as liaison with external regulatory agencies. Ensure company is aware of and prepared for Environmental changes and evolving industry standards by representing The Company at regulatory updates and industry forums and reporting back identified issues.




What you will bring:

  • University degree in Engineering, environment and\or energy or related field
  • Ten (10) years’ experience in an industrial setting including management experience
  • Experience in unionized environment
  • Leadership and critical thinking skills – capable of leading cross functional teams as a change agent to influence the culture and achieve project goals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills – ability to influence all levels of the organization to achieve project goals
  • Strong analytical skills including troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills effective in leading facility teams to quickly identify issues, causes and sustainable corrective actions.
  • Competence in facilitating the development and implementation of processes, policies and procedures to investigate and resolve non-compliant situations
  • Expertise in environmental and energy auditing
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent understanding of Incident Investigation/Root Cause Analysis
  • Ability to analyze and interpret information
  • Understanding environmental provincial regulations
  • Proficient in training and train-the-trainer
  • Good working knowledge of standard office computer technology such as Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office products and the Internet.
  • Bilingual is an asset (English and French
