reLoad Sustainable Design Inc. is seeking a professional to join our growing energy modelling and building performance team as Energy and Carbon Performance Specialist. As an Energy and Carbon Performance Specialist, you will be part of a specialized team that engages with design teams and clients. This position’s focus will be as a whole building energy modelling specialist which requires excellent technical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

The typical day-to-day work will include the following:

·       Develop whole building energy models and other building performance analysis across multiple building performance simulation platforms.

·       Collaborate and engage with clients and external project team members including architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, to ensure technical info is coordinated, understood, and analyzed.

·       Apply strategic thinking to project objectives and tailor energy model construction and analysis to drive performance and low carbon building projects. 

·       Develop energy efficiency and low carbon design strategies for large complex buildings including healthcare, aquatic centers and labs.

·       Develop visually engaging and informative charts, tables and diagrams to make model data results meaningful, relevant, and actionable for all project team members and easily understood by clients.

·       Write reports and complete excel based workbooks to develop calculations, summarize results, develop recommendations and propose design solutions.

·       Initiate presentations to clients and project teams to communicate recommendations.

·       Support junior staff in performance model building, peer reviews, and interpretation of building design drawings and specifications.

·       Develop firmwide processes and standards that will advance modelling process, quality, and design innovation.

·       Participate in proposal writing and project strategy development.

·       Participate in business development activities.

Must Haves

We are seeking a candidate with the following qualifications:

·       Advanced degree in mechanical engineering

·       6-10 years’ of professional experience as a whole building energy modeler of larger complex projects.

·       A strong foundation in engineering principles particularly in thermodynamics, heat transfer, HVAC systems, building envelope design and electrical systems.

·       Strong ability to process large datasets and derive meaningful insights.

·       Demonstrated experience and proficiency in IES Virtual Environment, including comfortably modelling of HVAC systems and controls in apacheHVAC.

·       Advanced understanding of energy model inputs and outputs, management, and post-processing of energy model results with the ability to identify design impacts.

·       Project management experience with the ability to proactively plan task deliverables, develop scopes, and attend multiple projects simultaneously in an organized and controlled manner.

·       Ability to clearly communicate complex technical information and convey findings and recommendations through detailed reports, presentations and technical documentation.

·       Experience with Measurement & Verification and energy model calibration

·       Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

·       Experience with AutoCAD & Revit

·       Experience with green building rating systems such as Zero Carbon Building Standard, Passive House, LEED, and the Living Building Challenge.

·       Deep understanding of applicable building codes in British Columbia, and various energy modelling codes in Canada and across North-America.


Nice To Haves

The following qualifications are an asset but not required:

·       Programming skills to support automating repetitive tasks, customizing modeling tools and developing new analysis methods, including Python.

·       Experience with Sketchup, PHPP, THERM, Rhino/Grasshopper/ Bug suite.

·       BEMP (ASHRAE) and LEED Accredited Professional with specialty.

·       Experience completing embodied carbon analysis an asset but not required.
