Position Overview

Reporting to the Director, Underwriting, the Senior Underwriter assumes responsibility for the risk selection in order to meet departmental objectives.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Underwrite complex facultative underwriting risks, according to RGA underwriting guidelines Possesses a solid understanding of both medical and financial underwriting techniques and stays current on related industry trends and advancements Ability to apply technical knowledge to complex case work Has a solid understanding of high new worth sales concepts and their applications in the market. Provides advanced technical expertise and support to client companies Demonstrates an ability to work productively in high pressure environment and effectively and proactively manage challenging situations Act independently within specified authority Co-signs cases from more junior underwriters as needed Actively supports the departmental management by providing input, assisting in training, leading team discussions, participating in projects, and being a positive contributor to the resolution of technical or client issues Liases with other RGA departemnts to share knowledge and assist with client projects, as necessary Participates in RGA events and industry activities and fosters relationships with key clients

Requirements

Qualifications:

College diploma / University degree or equivalent working experience 4 to 6 years of experience in direct or reinsurance underwriting, including experience with substandard business, medical and financial underwriting FLMI or FALU designations, or significant progress towards obtaining these or other related industry designations Bilingual French/English (oral and written) is required given the need to communicate orally and in writing with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside of Quebec Experience with multiple lines of business (Life, DI, CI) is an asset

Solid knowledge of medical terminology, insurance contract law, and basic accounting principles as applied to risk selection Ability to make complex choices based on limited data, and explain the basis of those decisions Excellent critical thinking skills Excellent logical and problem solving skills Solid time management & organizational skills Ability to read and comprehend a large volume of medical and financial information in a timely fashion Works effectively as a positive influencer and contributes to ideas and solutions Proactively builds strong interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients Excellent oral and written communication skills Self motivated, flexible and creative Strong client focus
