THE JOB
The North America region is recruiting a creative and dynamic English-speaking reporter for a full-time position in our Montreal bureau to cover Canadian news across all fields (political, economic, societal, environmental, cultural, and some sports) for international audiences.
Wide-ranging and exciting, the job involves a strong mix of daily news reporting but also features from this vast country. This position will require travel, including at short notice for breaking news stories.
You will have sharp news judgement to identify stories of global interest and also be constantly bubbling with lively people-led feature story ideas that will help our overseas audiences understand the issues and dynamics that drive Canada and its people.
Canada and its vast and diverse territory provide a fantastic dateline from which to illustrate environmental and sustainability issues that are having an impact across the globe. You will use your storytelling skills to convey the scope, urgency and significance of these issues and also to illustrate resistance to climate science and the backlash against measures aimed at limiting climate change. You will also need to translate French-language stories written by your colleagues.
Hours can be long at times, depending on the news, and include work at weekend and on holidays from time to time. You will also be asked to take part in the rotation of the on-call system for Canada journalists in the evenings and at weekends.
You will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of your reporting and respect for the agency’s editorial policies.
You should have a keen eye for exploiting the multimedia aspect of any coverage and work closely with the video reporter and photographers. It is important to stress that all AFP journalists contribute to AFP’s newsgathering process in all formats, with the common goal of highly reactive, high quality, multimedia journalism.
Use of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and networking apps is essential, in accordance with the guidelines for using social networks as an AFP journalist.
In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
SKILLS REQUIRED
A dynamic journalist with a proven ability to write rapid, accurate and high-quality stories – from breaking news and wraps to features and analyses -- with flair. Good French.
