Job Brief

The Lethbridge Public Library is seeking a leader to fill a parental leave position as our Manager: Strategic Communications.

The Lethbridge Public Library is seeking a leader to fill a parental leave position as our Manager: Strategic Communications. This position is responsible for executing organizational content strategies and providing leadership to enhance and build the Library’s unique brand image and strengthen its relationship with stakeholders. The role will focus on effectively communicating the successes of the Library, its people and programs and services, internally as well as externally to stakeholders in Lethbridge and across southern Alberta through dynamic storytelling.

This position plays a lead role in: developing and executing an organizational content strategy; developing Library messages and brand awareness; coordination and development of strategic communications and content management; executing the Library’s fund development strategy; service and policy development; coordination and leadership of project teams; and carrying out the Library’s Plan of Service.

As part of the Library management team, the Manager: Strategic Communications: 

Leads the execution and implementation of an organizational content strategy across all branches.  Oversees the success of strategic communications initiatives across mediums. Manages and provides leadership to communications staff. Ensures a standard and common visual identity and consistent messaging in all official Library communication initiatives (print and digital).  Plays a key role on an interdepartmental team to advance the Library’s digital presence.  Develops and implements marketing communications campaigns and strategies and monitors their success. Defines key performance indicators for each communications channel which will indicate a campaign's level of success. Creates internal communications protocols and initiatives that will foster employee morale. Oversees the creation of marketing and communications collateral to ensure that it is consistent with the organization's brand and key messages. Oversees the production and distribution of an internal e-newsletter and other internal communications initiatives deemed necessary. Organizes media events and press conferences; responds to media queries at the direction of leadership. Oversees the Library’s social media strategy including, KPIs for each channel, audience and initiative; ensures guidelines are up-to-date and socialized. Reaches out to influencers and media in order to arrange press opportunities. Provides media and communications training to library staff as needed. Develops and implements best practices for fund development activities such as sponsorships, planned giving and fundraising campaigns.  Actively promotes and coordinates fundraising events and activities, as part of an interdepartmental team. Identifies and creates opportunities to attract and build relationships with prospective donors, and to recognize donor and sponsor support. Assists in developing and monitoring budgets related to their areas of responsibility ensuring a balanced departmental budget over the course of the year. Participates (both online and offline) in the broader community, to determine community needs and build relationships. Works with the Library Management team to develop and implement strategies and plans to meet the Plan of Service priorities; Actively participates in the development of Library policies, generally and as related to specific projects; Represents the Library on committees and organizations both internal and external to the Library, generally and as related to specific projects; Performs administrative on call duties as required.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has a background in marketing, communications and fund development; demonstrated leadership and active participation in the community; a commitment to growth and strengthening the organization; and an understanding and dedication to core public library values.

The ideal candidate will have:

Bachelors Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related discipline. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.  5+ years prior experience working in a marketing or communications role Proven success designing and executing marketing, communications and fund development strategies and campaigns Demonstrated commitment to stay up-to-date on industry trends and able to stay ahead of the curve  Excellent organizational and project management skills Proven ability to think analytically and strategically Ability to work well as part of a team as well as independently, demonstrating initiative and problem solving Demonstrated facilitation and conflict management skills Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple, often competing priorities under pressure to meet tight deadlines  Strong collaboration skills with ability to communicate effectively and maintain a good working relationship with internal and external groups Familiarity or experience working with CMS software is an asset Superior written and verbal communications skills Social media savvy Desktop publishing and design skills would be an asset Ability to assign and delegate work, problem solve, answer questions, and analyze and evaluate outcomes Ability to supervise staff, assess training and development needs, and evaluate staff performance  Proven professionalism, including the ability to handle sensitive information with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality

This is a term appointment and will terminate upon return of the incumbent from parental leave, expected to be January 2025. 

Salary Range: $78,312.00 to $93,970.50; commensurate with experience. Hours of work are 75 hours bi-weekly with occasional evening and weekend work required. Working at the Main Branch and reporting to the CEO.
