Introduction to Biology I

Compensation 

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. 

· Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $ per hour. 

· Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $ per hour. 

Duties 

Responsibility 1: 

Manage waitlists and overrides into courses, as required

Manage requests to switch lab sections

Coordinate and administer make-up exams

Correspond with students who have missed laboratories, assignments, test, exams and assisting in the coordination of make-up assessments, as approved by the course instructor and/or senior demonstrator

Work with Brightspace (or other online learning system) and Gradebook (or similar) to update and manage course grades, as required

Academic Misconduct-Maxient

Responsibility 2: 

Liaise with Student Academic Services (SAS) and course instructors to coordinate academic accommodations relating to individual students

Communicate with SAS as required to contest individual student complaints regardingaccommodations. This individual in this position will ‘represent’ the department in cases escalating to higher levels.

Responsibility 3: 

Maintain familiarity with existing provincial and university regulations around academic accommodations

Liaise with Senior Demonstrators, Faculty, and staff to maintain awareness of changes in policies affecting them

Responsibility 4: 

Liaise with Student Health Services as needed to intervene in serious mental health issues affecting individual students, particularly those with the potential for self-harm

Deal with vaccination, masking, and related issues to ensure students are aware of regulations and policies. Intervene when required to refer non-compliance issues to university authorities

Follow up to verify medical documentation or claims preventing students from completing assessments

Responsibility 5: 

Collect anonymous data relating to numbers and types of accommodations and undertake basic data analysis to track trends

Identify problem areas and propose solutions

Qualifications

The position requires broad experience in (field). Must have previous experience in demonstrating laboratories and supervising other demonstrators. Must have an (degree). Must have leadership and organizational skills with ability to assign duties to demonstrators and troubleshoot in the laboratory setting. Safety is a major issue in these labs and the incumbent must be able to detect potential hazards and have the ability and skills to rapidly and appropriately deal with problems as they occur.
