Effective January 1st, 2024 the salary range for this position is $ to $ per hour in compliance with OPSEU Unified Bargaining Unit collective agreement provisions. The new rates, effective retroactive to January 1, 2024, were recently confirmed and dates for implementation of the new salary rates are still to be determined.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

perform and lead field data collection, including forest surveys, using established provincial measurement and sampling procedures and techniques maintain and support data quality standards and the timely completion of surveys operate specialized terrestrial field sampling equipment to perform audits and collect data as assigned work outdoors in inclement weather, in teams of two or more, which may be in remote locations, operating all-terrain vehicles

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired. You must be willing to complete field equipment certifications as needed. (chainsaw, ATV, etc.) You may be required to work weekends and holidays, and in remote locations for up to 10 days.

Technical knowledge:

You have knowledge of field-based terrestrial ecosystems, forestry sampling procedures and equipment. You are proficient in identifying trees, plant species, forest pests, wildlife, and soil classification.

Field work expertise:

You have knowledge of field data and sample collection standards and techniques (including forestry surveys) and methods of effective documentation. You have the ability to work and navigate in remote locations ( maps and compass) and operate, adjust and repair forestry field equipment, such as tablets, tree measuring devices, GPS, etc.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

You are able to use your interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a project team and collaborate with partners. You have the ability to take initiative and work with minimal guidance while contributing or leading a team of contract staff or students and assigning, monitoring, and reporting on the team progress.

Analytical skills:

You have analytical and problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot operational or technical field situations. You can complete repetitive tasks with an attention to detail to maintain quality data collection and productivity.

Computer proficiency:

You have sound data management skills and computer proficiency with a knowledge of relevant software applications to collect, generate and use GIS information and data collection tools in remote locations.
