What can I expect to do in this role?

There are two Forest Research Technician vacancies being staffed.

Both roles will require you to:

assist in scheduling and implementation of all field and laboratory projects provide leadership to field crews, ensuring efficient and accurate data collection, and crew cohesion engage in and provide training for field crews and assist in the development of field and/or lab protocols prepare written partner/field progress reports, conduct data summaries and standard analysis purchase, calibrate, service, clean and test electronic instruments and other measuring devices to conduct field and lab work ensure that health and safety requirements are understood and followed in the workplace

Additionally, in the fixed term role, you will:

install, maintain, decommission, and troubleshoot weather stations / stream gauges / flux towers across the province, applying your prior knowledge of wetlands, carbon cycles, and climate change organize, vet, and prepare data for later analysis and publications, in collaboration with a mentoring research scientist

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.

Technical expertise:

You have theoretical and field-based knowledge of ecosystem management principles related to forest management and monitoring activities; or you have knowledge of wetlands, carbon cycle and climate change. You have knowledge of general laboratory procedures, such as pH measurement, sample preparation, sample extraction, soil, and tree sample collection. You are knowledgeable about data collection and management standards and operational practices for information gathering to ensure complete, accurate information is available and secure for subsequent use. You have knowledge of scientific design methodologies, field, laboratory, and growth facility techniques and procedures to provide leadership and support to colleagues and field teams.

Analytical skills:

You possess analytical and problem-solving skills to determine the nature of deviations from data and recommend corrective action. You have proven analytical and organizational skills to design quality control protocols and ensure samples provide comparable data for future analyses. You can use your technical and organizational skills to plan and schedule equipment calibration, collect/process/analyze samples, perform inventory and for accurate data entry.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

You have proven verbal and written communication skills to provide supervisor and research scientists with data summaries, updates, program results, etc. You have interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships and liaise with a variety of clients. You have communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and support staff training.

Computer proficiency:

You are proficient with computers and common office productivity software, and have adaptability to learn new applications and technologies. Possessing knowledge of R or other programming languages would be an asset.
