Key responsibilities for a Construction Estimator for commercial projects include:



  1. Cost Estimation: Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for commercial construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.


  2. Bid Preparation: Lead the preparation of competitive and comprehensive bids, ensuring all project requirements are met and aligned with client expectations.


  3. Budget Management: Collaborate with project managers and clients to establish budgets, monitor costs, and ensure projects remain within financial constraints.


  4. Subcontractor & Supplier Coordination: Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring the selection of qualified vendors who provide competitive pricing.


  5. Project Analysis: Analyze project plans, specifications, and drawings to identify potential cost-saving opportunities, risks, and areas of concern.


  6. Risk Management: Identify and assess project risks, recommending strategies to mitigate potential cost overruns and delays.


  7. Client Communication: Communicate with clients, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to clarify project requirements, provide updates, and address issues as they arise.


  8. Value Engineering: Offer value engineering solutions to optimize costs without compromising quality or project objectives.


  9. Report Preparation: Generate detailed reports and presentations for senior management and clients to support decision-making processes.


  10. Team Leadership: Mentor and train junior estimators, sharing best practices and helping to build a strong estimating team.

Key attributes include:



  1. Extensive Experience: 6+ years in construction estimation, with a proven track record in accurately estimating costs for commercial projects of varying sizes and complexities. Experience with both pre-construction and live project estimating is crucial. Extensive knowledge and experience in SWO is an asset.


  2. Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of construction processes, materials, and methods, as well as familiarity with local building codes, regulations, and industry standards. Proficient in using industry-standard estimating software (e.g., Procore, Buildertrend, or Bluebeam).


  3. Attention to Detail: Ability to review plans, specifications, and drawings thoroughly to identify discrepancies, cost-saving opportunities, and potential risks. Strong quantitative skills are essential for analyzing cost data.


  4. Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively present estimates, engage with clients, collaborate with project teams, and negotiate with subcontractors and suppliers.


  5. Leadership and Teamwork: Ability to mentor and guide junior estimators and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project managers, engineers, and architects, to ensure projects meet budget and schedule requirements.


  6. Problem-Solving Ability: Capable of identifying potential risks early and offering creative, cost-effective solutions. Proactive in addressing issues before they impact the project's financial outcomes.


  7. Client-Focused: Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with clients, contractors, and stakeholders, ensuring estimates are aligned with their needs and expectations.


  8. Educational Background: A degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field is preferred.


  9. Adaptability: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Comfort with adjusting estimates based on changing project scopes or market conditions.


  10. Results-Oriented: Focused on delivering accurate, timely estimates that contribute to the successful completion of projects within budget, fostering long-term client satisfaction.
