**Responsibilities**:As a Construction Estimator, your duties may include the following:

- Prepare and estimate budget costs of materials, labour, equipment and subcontractors for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, studying architectural plans and specifications,
- Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards and conduct negotiations,
- Establish and maintain the tendering processes,
- Set up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures,
- Write up and present budgets, reports, and project plans,
- Resolve cost differences by analyzing and collecting info,
- Prepare cost and expenditure statements and forecasts at regular intervals for the duration of the project,
- Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers and subcontractors,
- Develops bids for construction projects,
- Works closely with Architects, Engineers, Owners, Subcontractors and the Project Management team,
- Schedules meetings with clients, site managers, and staff,
- Navigate and understand building codes,
- Stays up to date with safety codes and improvements in construction,
- Processes paperwork and travels to building sites as required,
- Assists in the transitioning of awarded projects to the Project Management team,
- G2 or G class driver’s license required (not a compulsion)

**Work Conditions**

The standard work week for construction estimators is 40 hours (8 hours per day, 5 days a week). As with many construction careers, there are peak periods that will require you to work overtime.

The majority of time will be spent in an office environment however site visits may be required in order to obtain additional information and meeting with stakeholders i.e. owners, project managers, architects and engineers.

As with all construction industry careers, safety is the top priority. Estimators are expected to be trained to work safely and wear personal protective equipment such as hard hats and steel toed boots whenever they are on construction sites.

**Construction Estimator Qualifications and Skills**:

- Strong math skills,
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications,
- Proficiency in demonstrating proposals and projects,
- Ability to handle multiple assignments at once,
- Knowledge of the latest building codes,
- Close attention to detail,
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills,

**Education and Experience Requirements**:

- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in architecture, or a similar field or completion of a college program in civil or construction engineering technology is normally required,
- Certificate in general construction, roofing, electrician etc.,
- Or several years of related experience is required,
- Certification by the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors is an asset but not necessarily required.

**Salary**: $60,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
