The Opportunity:

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement” Job Classification: Service Worker III

The Service Worker, Grounds position is responsible for assisting the Grounds team. The Service Worker III will operate a variety of equipment and perform specialized tasks such as grounds maintenance, including landscape and maintenance, planting, fertilizing, mowing, and spraying. 

Key Job Functions:

Assist the Grounds team in planning, propagating, transplanting, growing, monitoring, fertilizing and assessing the annual bedding cropPrepare planting beds and maintains perennials; prune trees and shrubsClean and maintains grounds, including spring and fall cleanupOperate equipment, including snow removal equipment, and landscaping equipment, such as sprayers, trailers, trucks, skid steers, lawn mower, etc.Control weeds and other pests through cultural methods and incorporate integrated pest management (IMP).Support Waste Management on CampusProvide guidance for temporary seasonal staff, and ensure best practices and standards are followed according to the procedures developed.Ensure that work orders are properly completed and related documentation is processed properly. Ensure Olds College campus remains a safe environment (access throughout campus)Performs other related duties as required 

Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

Post-secondary education in Horticulture - Diploma or trade certificatePossess a minimum of a Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's LicensePesticide Applicators license or willing to attain certificationExperience in weed and pest controlExtensive knowledge of pest plants and other types of pestsKnowledge of environmental/sustainability issuesPossess extensive knowledge of grounds equipment operationAbility to work independently and / or as a member of a teamAble to lead a small team of summer studentsPhysically fit and able to work in adverse weather conditionsBasic Computer literacy skillsAbility to adopt new technology and practicesExcellent customer service skillsMust respect and actively promote and follow the health and safety policies, including hazard assessments. Wearing proper attire and PPE such as CSA approved safety footwear (not supplied) and successfully completing WHMIS certification training (provided)Standard First Aid is an assetMaintaining a required level of fitness including: manual dexterity, ability to lift up to 50lbs, and ability to perform repetitive physical workActs ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being

Working Conditions:

Exposure to adverse conditions such as temperature extremes when working outside; noise, fumes and vibration from operating equipment; dirt and filth from working on the grounds. Required safety equipment will include eye protection, ear protection, CSA approved footwearPhysical Demands: Prolonged periods of time confined to sitting when operating equipment, bending, kneeling and walking and jarringLifting up to 50+ pounds
