Calgary, Canada Law Society of Alberta Full time

Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (“ALIA”) is the member-funded, non-profit corporation that manages Alberta’s indemnity program for private practice lawyers (“Subscribers”), providing economic and reputational protection to them and compensation to members of the public who have suffered specified financial losses due to the actions of Subscribers including professional errors and misappropriation. ALIA operates as a separate financial entity from The Law Society of Alberta, ALIA’s sole shareholder which regulates the legal profession in the public interest.

ALIA is seeking an Articling Student to join its team for a 12-month term in 2024-2025. ALIA’s General Counsel and Senior Manager, Risk will serve as the Articling Student’s principal, and the student will also be assigned a mentor and will work with various lawyers and professionals within ALIA including our in-house counsel team and counsel on our claims team. This will give the Articling Student hands-on involvement in interesting claims and litigation files, as well as exposure to corporate in-house practice. The Articling Student will gain valuable insight into lawyer professional liability claims and practice.

The successful candidate should be ready to commit to working full-time in our Calgary office starting on July 30, 2024. ALIA may be able to accommodate requests to change this start date.

Key Accountabilities

The Articling Student will:

Assist with the representation of ALIA and Subscribers on claims litigation files of varying complexity, including assisting with liability assessment, legal research, litigation strategy, settlement negotiations and court attendances. Assist with the investigation, assessment, management and settlement of neglience and misappropriation claims made against Subscribers. Assist in the assessment and evaluation of coverage under ALIA’s Group Policy. Conduct research and write legal memoranda. Assist with governance and special projects. Participate in ALIA’s internal education initiatives. Make a positive contribution to a high performance, results-orientated culture. Complete other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualified for admission to the Law Society of Alberta as a student-at-law. Expectation to successfully complete the requirements for a Canadian common law degree by July 2024, or internationally trained lawyer or graduate who has obtained a Certificate of Qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of executives, managers, staff, and subject matter experts. Excellent time management, prioritization, organizational, judgment and communication skills. Strong work ethic with attention to detail and a sharp focus on the quantity and quality of work produced. Occasional business travel within Alberta may be required.

What to Include

Please include an attachment of your cover letter and resume addressed to John Eamon, K.C., General Counsel & Senior Manager, Risk as well as undergraduate and law school transcripts and, if desired, a legal writing sample (maximum of 10 pages).

Additional Information

ALIA values diversity in its workforce and equal access to opportunity. All inquiries and applications will be handled with the highest level of confidentiality. Interested applicants should apply by Friday, May 3, 2024.

The successful candidate will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement and provide a current criminal record check prior to confirmation of employment.

Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by Tuesday, May 14, 2024. ALIA thanks all applicants, however only selected candidates will be contacted.

As a Student-at-Law, you will be provided with a balanced work load so that you will have an appropriate amount of time to work on the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP). You will also be provided with paid time off as necessary to attend scheduled PREP sessions.  Please note that accelerated PREP is not available for this articling placement.

ALIA will cover the cost of the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP), student membership with the Canadian Bar Association, and other fees to be agreed upon.

Current Hybrid Work

What does our current hybrid model look like?

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are in-office attendance days and Mondays and Fridays are flexible. This means that you may work remotely on Mondays and Fridays if you want. You are also more than welcome to continue to work four or five days in the office if that is your preference.

Having multiple in-office days allows room for collaboration, social connections, mentorship, and cross-departmental interaction.
