Job Summary

The Manager, Port Operations – Eastern Passage is responsible for effectively running the 24/7 operational functions of all facets of the Terminal and assists the General Manager in the achievement of operational goals, growth, and profitability. The role is accountable for observing and reporting on compliance with all operating and safety rules as well as implementing departmental safety initiatives and supporting interdepartmental safety objectives. The position fosters strong working relationships with all Autoport customers, the carriers, and the vessels with a focus on the timely and safe movement of product throughout the process starting from arrival and continuing though to yard exit.

Main Responsibilities

Daily Operations, Planning and Management

·Oversee the entire Eastern Passage Terminal and its 24/7 operations

·Lead a team of managers and supervisors ensuring clear direction is given

·Ensure that targets for loading and unloading of both vessel and rail as well as pulling loads for convoy exits are met

·Set daily and long-term goals

·Review all operating processes to refine, optimize and simplify them to allow for a more efficient execute tasks while continuing to work within safety guidelines

People Management and Coaching

·Partner with and support the Terminal Manager to drive key initiatives internally

·Coach supervisors to set expectations, lead, train and develop all team members through the management process

·Manage, direct, and provide insight and follow-up to a staff of supervisors and unionized team members

·Hold quarterly town hall meetings to allow staff to voice concerns and ensure action items are addressed in a timely fashion

·Perform Safety Engagement Validations with managers and supervisors and provide constructive feedback with a focus on coaching front line supervisors and managers to effectively use the PMRC process as a coaching tool

·Respond to grievances, and recommend disciplinary measures for staff

Safety Understanding, Compliance and Enforcement

·Ensure both the Regional and Site Safety Action Plans are clearly communicated to all employees, customers, and contractors and that the items included within are upheld

·Participate in management safety discussions and support the local health and safety committee

·Build safety compliance and improve safety results through regular efficiency tests, PMRC Validations and walkabouts, provide feedback to subordinates and take action on non-compliant behavior

·Ensure proper training, auditing, and enforcement of standard operating procedures

Financials, Budgets, and Forecasts

·Oversee Terminal financials, budgeting, and operating forecasts

·Account for asset utilization to maximize efficiency

·Participate in damage elimination team process

·Approve, though the General Manager Autoport, invoices for all terminal purchases

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress. The role is occasionally performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. The role requires minimal travel (5%) for training, attending meetings, and other limited local travel associated with CN’s activities.

Requirements

Experience

Transportation

·Minimum five years of experience in the transportation industry

oExperience working with unions as the key negotiator

oRail or automotive experience*

oPrevious experience with Third Party Logistics (3PL) and transportation providers that specialize in the automotive industry*

Education/Certification/Designation

·Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Business Administration
