As a Strategic Lead & Facilitator, Indigenous Cultural Safety with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

Report to the Director, Indigenous Cultural Safety, Indigenous Health, you will lead the development of a Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) wide education plan, and leads the facilitation of cultural safety education and training in a way that is relevant to the values and strategic directions of the organization and with the goal of enhancing the organization’s capacity to deliver health services in a culturally safe manner. Provide consultation and direction to address specific cultural safety issues; contributes and participates in the development of guidelines, systems, and instruments to support the achievement and maintenance of cultural safety throughout the continuum of health services; and collaborates with colleagues in other disciplines to ensure appropriate staff development and participation in education and cultural safety initiatives. Facilitate and develop the curriculum required for the training to improve the competencies of the VCH workforce. Collaborates and supports the development of all training with colleagues in other health disciplines to ensure appropriate staff development and participation in education, and that the Indigenous Cultural Safety lens is applied to the development of all initiatives and programs. The Facilitator will work collaboratively with the Indigenous Health Program, the Indigenous community partners, and other internal/external stakeholders to lead the organization in meeting its goal of enhancing Indigenous people's access to VCH services. Patient and staff safety is a priority and responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Adult Learning or a related discipline. Three (3) years’ recent, related experience in coaching, mentoring, training, conflict resolution and provision of facilitation of indigenous cultural competency curriculum and training. These experiences will include a minimum of five (5) years working for an Indigenous organization/program that includes interacting and developing relationships with First Nations, Metis and Inuit people and Indigenous communities as well as government agencies and ministries along with extensive understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture and specifically Vancouver Coastal Health region’s First Nation’s cultures. Valid BC Driver’s license as local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle.

Knowledge & Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated ability to provide Indigenous culturally competent and sensitive care. Demonstrated understanding of provincial and federal guiding principles and documents, for example In Plain Sight report, and calls to action to eliminate systemic racism in the health care sector. Demonstrated ability to apply strength-based and Trauma-Informed Principles to practice, has completed trauma informed training. Demonstrated ability to conduct spiritual and cultural and historical assessments, to understand staff potential lived experience of intergenerational trauma and health inequities. Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and provincial/national standards on health, safety and wellness. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and support teams, inspiring a shared vision that aligns with organization goals, objectives, and strategies. Demonstrated ability to build strong, positive relationships and utilizes strong communication skills and client-based solution-focused approach to finding creative and proactive ways to support staff wellness. Demonstrated ability to work professionally, diplomatically, and persuasively to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners. In depth knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture and History in BC and Canada Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated highly specialized skills in assessing and managing conflict in often cross cultural, emotionally charged, and complex learning environments. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, work independently and collaboratively in a work environment. Demonstrated ability to design education material and lesson plans. Ability to utilize strong interpersonal skills to deal with others effectively. Requires strong analysis, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to teach, coach and mentor all levels of care providers. Commitment to ongoing professional development.  Proven ability to work well under pressure, either related to deadlines or unforeseen circumstances. Ability to operate related equipment, including computer hardware and software. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
