MU102A - Foundational Vocal Techniques: Non-Voice Majors (Fall 2024)

Position Summary :

This course is designed for first-year BMus students whose primary instrument is not voice. MU102A focuses on healthy singing and vocal fluency. Moveable do solfège will be introduced with an emphasis on singing with proper vowel formation, but not sight-singing. Methods of good vocal production (clear tone, singing in tune, vowel formation) and breathing, the basics of healthy singing and building confidence with using the singing voice are at the core of this course.

This course will be taught in coordination with MU102B. Candidates interested in coordinating the multi-sectioned course should highlight their experience and assets in their application. The course coordinator receives a stipend in accordance with article 28.3.1. Only one course coordinator shall be appointed.

Qualifications – Required: MMus in Voice, Choral Conducting, or Education; or equivalent professional experience in the training of young singers.

Qualifications – Discipline: Voice or Choral Conducting or Music Education

Qualifications - Areas of Specialization: Classical voice, vocal training, vocal health, IPA.

Qualifications - Professional Designation: N/A

Qualifications – Preferred: A Doctorate in Voice, Choral Conducting, or Music Education is preferred.

Qualifications – Asset: Certifications or substantial experience in Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, Body Mapping or equivalent. Experience teaching Musicianship/Solfège or Applied Voice at the university level. Research expertise in vocal pedagogy or similar. While the primary genre of instruction is Classical Voice, experience teaching in contemporary commercial music styles is an asset.

Salary: $6,17.60 per section
