Currently, our Emergency and Protective Services division has a Fire Protection Specialist opportunity.

The Fire Protection Specialist is required to apply fire protection principles to ensure that fire risks are mitigated at Bruce Power by applying fire prevention strategies so that if a fire event were to occur the impact is minimal and can recover from those events which have been assessed as risks to Bruce Power's nuclear, commercial and business operations.

This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.

What will you be responsible for?

Provides day-to-day support to Station operations for Fire Protection issues, by applying fire prevention guidance from applicable fire codes and standards and Bruce Power’s existing Fire Protection Assessments.

Provides fire protection review and support of project design and construction.

Conducts inspections and audits of buildings and initiates corrective action(s) as required to address deficiencies and infractions.

Become familiar with Federal, Provincial, Municipal and Industrial fire protection documentation. Be knowledgeable in Bruce Power's Emergency Services Program implementing documentation, at on-site and off-site facilities.

Provide fire protection technical advice and guidance to internal and external personnel in accordance with approved Federal, Provincial, Municipal Codes and Standards and Bruce Power's Fire Protection Assessments and Emergency Services Program.

Represent Bruce Power on external agency Fire Protection committees and working groups such as those at the Provincial, Municipal and Industrial level as directed by Supervisor.

Develop, prepare and revise for approval documentation (, procedures) necessary to support the implementation of Bruce Power’s Fire Protection Program.

Coordinate the implementation of new and revised Fire Protection Program documentation with Bruce Power staff, Federal, Provincial, Municipal and Industrial agencies as needed.

Monitor the composition of Bruce Power's Emergency Response Organization to ensure compliance with requirements in Bruce Power Fire Protection Plan and Minimum Complement documents.

Continuously monitor and provide subject matter expertise to Bruce Power’s Fire Protection Impairment & Notification process.

Conduct Fire Protection program assessments as requested to identify where gaps may exist and recommend course of action.

Prepare and submit reports for approval to meet Regulatory, Provincial and Bruce Power's Emergency Services Program requirements.

On a periodic basis, may require supervisory responsibility during drills and exercises but limited to work assignments, work checking and as necessary giving instruction.

Act as a Training Material Subject Matter Expert and in this capacity review any fire protection training course content material.

Act as Subject Matter Expert on Fire Protection Clauses of License Condition Handbook and Fire Protection related criteria in REG Doc to provide interpretation to regulatory requirements and fire protection related event reporting.

Recommend changes to Bruce Power fire protection training to Supervisor and others as required.

Act as an evaluator/controller in drills or exercises if assigned by the Supervisor. Provide feedback to drill participants and their Supervisors on their fire response capability under test and/or actual emergency situations, as per assigned role in the drill.

Support the preparation of drill / exercise /event reports detailing Bruce Power fire protection performance.

Conduct and support Fire Event Investigations to identify preventive measures.

Prepare approvals for transient materials in the station.

Be familiar with N293, NBCC and NFCC and be able to provide judgements and interpretations on code requirements, reporting of events and alternate solutions.

Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills

Requires knowledge of fire codes and standards, fire prevention, fire protection and fire suppression in a nuclear industry. 

Requires practical experience working with fire codes and standards, fire prevention, fire protection and fire suppression in a large industrial or commercial environment to identify and assess the various aspects fire hazards.

Requires the ability to prepare effective recommendations based on findings, root cause determination, and past experience, in order to determine what course of action is required to achieve desired results.

Education and Experience

This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training in a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology training (Grade XII plus 4 years) or by having the equivalent level of education, such as a 4 year engineering or technology degree.
