Research Assistant, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics
This Research Assistant position offers an opportunity to gain experience in applied economics and farm financial analysis and extension to make a meaningful impact on the livestock and forage sectors. The position is based in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Saskatchewan which is nationally recognized for its research and teaching in applied economics, business and policy analysis for agriculture, food and resource sectors.
Primary Purpose: You will contribute to data collection, analysis and dissemination of results for ongoing and future projects related to the profitability and financial feasibility of livestock and forage technologies and practices, cost of production and factors associated with recommended practice adoption.
Nature of Work: This is a limited term position, available immediately and ending March 31, 2028, with the possibility of extension. The successful applicant will report to Extension Economist, Kathy Larson and will be expected to, largely, work in an office setting. Hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm ( hr per week). This position is exempt from overtime. Some travel may be required.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities: Conduct literature reviews on topic areas of relevance to livestock and forage sectors. Gather, organize and analyze data using a variety of instruments and sources ( Statistics Canada, online databases, surveys, interviews, collaborator field notes and measures, etc). Collect primary and secondary data for analysis and extension related to production costs, marketing methods, risk management, adoption of recommended and/or sustainable practices. Clean, organize and validate data to ensure accuracy and consistency. Assist in planning and conducting focus groups, interviews and surveys with farms/ranchers, policymakers and industry stakeholders. Support the development of models to evaluate livestock and forage practices and policies. Contribute to analysis and writing of required reporting. Contribute to writing of journal manuscripts. Support the preparation of fact sheets, farm press articles, presentations, and visualizations to extend research findings.
Education: Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or a related degree from a reputable institution.
Licenses: Class 5 driver’s license
Experience: One to three years’ experience working in farm business management, agricultural economics or closely related field. Experience in research and research ethics. Familiarity with management, policy and sustainability issues related to livestock (especially beef cow-calf) and forage production in western Canada considered an asset.
Skills: Time management and organizational skills are needed to meet the requirements and timelines of multiple projects at various stages. The successful candidate will require strong interpersonal skills to be able to extend research results in multiple formats to different audiences. Proven ability to work effectively with industry organizations, government extensionists, researchers, ranchers/farmers, non-government organizations and other groups representing the agricultural industry. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and statistical software. Proven ability to summarize and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. Experience with online survey platforms and NVivo considered an asset.
