As a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies and within the Integrated Mission Systems Segment, the WESCAM division develops the most advanced optical sensor and targeting systems for global defense and military sectors, National Security, Search & Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies. About the Role
Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for design of highly complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical components from concept straight through to production. Although our work is driven by specific objectives, goals and defined boundaries, we execute our work under wide guidelines.
Mechanical Engineering at L3HARRIS WESCAM requires the application of advanced engineering experiences requiring specialized knowledge for decidedly complex engineering assignments. Our state-of-the-art electro-optical stabilized imaging systems are renowned globally for their durability, capability and modularity. This is by no accident – our Mechanical Engineers are some of the best in the industry and are directly responsible for our success.
Primary Responsibilities
Responsible for mechanical design and analysis of complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production using modern tools. Assigned projects will be of an advanced nature and will involve solving difficult technical problems. Carries out engineering assignments requiring intermediate engineering knowledge. Requires application of intermediate engineering knowledge. Assigned projects and problems make it often necessary to modify established methods and devise new approaches. Is relied upon to complete difficult projects in a timely manner. A technical contributor or lead to the completion of project goals and objectives. Contributes to the definition of departmental best practices and design approaches. Work is assigned in terms of specific objectives and goals with defined boundaries. Work is carried out within wide guidelines. Technical guidance and review is available as required. Receives technical or project related guidance and direction to other staff. May act as a lead on smaller projects. May provide guidance on complex design practices and development methods. May provide some level of product level ownership. Participate in design reviews as either a presenter or a reviewer. Supporting the verification and validation of new product designs. Keep in synchronization with mechanical industry trends and new technologies that may be relevant to L3HARRIS Wescam’s present and future product developmentRequired Capabilities
Intermediate user of FEA for static and dynamics analysis, preferably ANSYS Intermediate user of a CFD (computation fluid dynamics) analysis package, preferably ANSYS Intermediate knowledge of a 3D CAD system, preferably SolidWorks Experience with Matlab or an equivalent mathematical application Knowledge of mechanical dynamics and vibration Knowledge of strength of materials and classical analysis methods Knowledge of opto-mechanical design principles Knowledge of machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites manufacturing techniques and processes Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques and methods Knowledge of Materials Science Strong communication skills and the ability to prepare detailed technical reports and specifications A highly motivated, self-starter Ability to learn and grow within a fast paced environment Meets the requirements of the Controlled Goods Registration Program and is eligible for a Canadian government security clearanceDesired Education and Experiences
Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience, or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 0-2 years of prior related experience, or In lieu of a degree, minimum of 6 years of prior related experience.
