Research Associate, MECCE Project, Educational Foundations

The MECCE Project is an international research partnership with the goal of advancing global climate literacy and action through improved quality and quantity of climate change communication and education (CCE). The MECCE Project partnership includes over 100 scholars and organizations, including an Advisory Committee comprised of the IPCC, UNESCO, UNFCCC, and UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report. This 6-year, $ million Partnership Grant is largely funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan, and directed by Prof. Marcia McKenzie.

The MECCE Project aims to increase context-informed understandings of quality CCE in policy and practice, as well as to provide global data to support governmental and intergovernmental benchmarking, target setting, and progress in quantity of CCE provision. The Project addresses these aims through three Axes of activities: 1) Case Studies, to increase the quality of CCE through generating novel understandings of quality CCE based on synthesized literature and select case studies; 2) Indicator Development, to increase the quantity of quality CCE through developing new datasets and indicators to support global CCE target-setting and monitoring; and 3) Knowledge Mobilization, to contribute high impact research-based deliverables for key partners and audiences to advance policy and practice.

Primary Purpose: The MECCE Project’s University of Saskatchewan (Canada) branch is seeking a Research Associate to advance the MECCE Project’s Indicator Development and Knowledge Mobilization work. This is position will be awarded to a candidate with evidence of outstanding potential as an academic researcher and leader.

Typical Duties and Accountabilities

Contribute to the development of global data and indicators of quality climate change communication and education, with each indicator each ideally representing at least 80 United Nations member countries; Develop visualizations for the Project’s Interactive Data Platform in PowerBI; Develop and carry out strategies to increase the quality of existing datasets held by the MECCE Project and/or its partners; Develop and carry out an input process from the MECCE Project’s Indicator Expert and Working Groups on global indicators to pursue between 2024 and 2026; Develop and monitor the contract work plan and coordinate with the MECCE Project Director, Project Manager, and Axis Lead on work plans and activity, to ensure project completion within planned timelines; and Draft at least two high-quality scholarly publications, and at least one plain language publication (, brief, blog post), with possible presentations at academic and UN Climate Change conferences.

Education

Required Qualifications

A PhD in a relevant social science discipline is required; Demonstrated experience developing indicators of climate change communication and education; Demonstrated experience with quantitative analysis software (, SPSS, R); Demonstrated experience with building data visualization and analysis tools using PowerBI; Experience with quantitative research theory, methods, and analysis, including comparative and partnership research designs; Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), including demonstrated capacity working in multidisciplinary teams; Excellent organisational and project management skills, with demonstrated team leadership experience; and Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team to meet deadlines and achieve project goals.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with training or previous research experience in any of the following: a) the theory and practice of education and/or public communications on climate change; b) intergovernmental processes, especially within the United Nations; c) government policy, especially in climate change communication and education; d) approaches for mobilizing research insights to non-academic audiences; and e) experience with wordpress content management systems. Fluency in a language additional to English is considered an asset.
