Purpose Statement

The job of Audiologist is done for the purpose/s of managing and providing audiology services in an educational setting for students with hearing difficulties; evaluating student's hearing, listening, and auditory processing; addressing deficits that can affect academic success, communication abilities, and psychosocial well-being; providing habilitation/rehabilitation of communicative problems and instructional services related to hearing impairment; providing technical assistance and follow-up, referrals; and collaborating with other school personnel to ensure a successful learning environment for the hearing-impaired student.

This job reports to the Director of Special Services and Building Administrator

Essential Functions

Advises parents and students on a variety of topics (e.g. audiologist findings, hearing loss impact, amplification benefits, medical counseling, educational resources, etc.) for the purpose of making referrals and facilitating a successful learning environment and outcome for students. Arranges for the maintenance and repair of audiological equipment (e.g. hearing aids, assistive listening devices, audiometers, FM units, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment in good condition and ensuring availability. Attends regulatory mandated meetings (e.g. MDA, IEP and 504 student/parent advisor, professional development, team intervention, etc.) for the purpose of participating to ensure auditory services are identified, communicated and implemented in support of student learning. Collaborates and consults with a variety of internal and external stakeholders (e.g. district personnel, colleagues and parents, community audiologists and physicians, etc.) for the purpose of managing, creating, and implementing effective student programs that address the audiological and educational needs of each hearing-impaired student. Conducts audiological and electro-acoustical evaluations (e.g. air conduction, bone-conduction, impedance, speech audiometry, special testing; listening checks of hearing aids, FM units/assistive listening devices, calibration of audiometers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring effective services and equipment are provided and maintained for each hearing-impaired student. Coordinates district-wide in-service activities (e.g. train technicians/staff, select audiometric equipment, audiological assessments, acoustic assessments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate support and services are available to parents, students, and school personnel to accommodate learning. Instructs school personnel, audiometric technicians, students, and parents (e.g. hearing screening, hearing loss, and other auditory disorders, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating a better understanding of the impact of auditory impairments on language, learning, literacy, and social development. Interprets educationally relevant audiological findings for the purpose of making recommendations for interpreters/translators. Maintains files and/or records, testing equipment (e.g. documentation, progress reports, treatment plans, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information and functional equipment in accordance with district guidelines and legal mandates. Manages district hearing screening program (e.g. develop, supervise and administer hearing tests, etc.) for the purpose of identifying students with hearing problems. Oversees Audiometric Tech (e.g. licensing, credential courses, training, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with state regulations. Participates in multidisciplinary professional team meetings (e.g. Individualized Education Plan (IEPs), etc.) for the purpose of developing educational recommendations (e.g. communication accommodations; transition planning, etc.) and implementing goals for auditory skill development. Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions. Prepares a variety of written material (e.g. correspondence, memos, reports, documentation, etc.) for the purpose of memorializing activities, providing written references, submitting recommendations and conveying information in accordance with established protocols. Provides consultation to school personnel in regard to selection, purchase, installation, maintenance, calibration checking and utilization of audiological equipment, etc. for the purpose of ensuring appropriate equipment is available and used correctly for each hearing-impaired student. Provides diagnostic services (e.g. evaluate hearing and auditory processing, etc.) for the purpose of identifying the need for amplification and hearing assistance technology to support students in their education environments. Provides direct intervention services in audiological rehabilitation in collaboration with Speech Language Pathologist and classroom teacher (e.g. monitoring and troubleshooting hearing aids and FM units/assistive listening devices, making ear molds, making noise measurements, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a consistent and successful learning environment for each hearing-impaired student. Researches equipment, materials and supplies (e.g. audiological equipment, etc.) for the purpose of determining the availability of needed resources for audiological services. Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, teachers, staff, students, community agencies, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate.
