General Information

Reporting to the Executive Medical Director, Quality & Safety, C&W , the Medical Leader, Simulation operates within the Practice and Learning portfolio. This role is responsible for leadership and program oversight to assure the provision of high-quality simulation with a focus on education, research, innovation, quality, and health system advancement.

The Medical Leader, Simulation is an ambassador and advocate of utilizing simulation to promote an organizational culture of interprofessional learning, and to advance a standard of excellence in health care education, research, and continuous quality improvement, in service of students, staff, medical staff, patients/families and the public. This role works in a dyad partnership with the Senior Leader, Clinical Education in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Simulation Program and associated services at the combined campus of BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (BCW). The Medical Leader collaborates with other leaders of clinical and professional/academic disciplines, as well as internal and external partners.

Specific Accountabilities

Leadership and Program Oversight

Contribute to the overall simulation strategic plan and infrastructure in alignment with BCCH and BCW strategic initiatives and the PHSA plan that includes faculty development, quality improvement, outreach, research and evaluation. Lead, learn, support, and contribute to simulation best practice methods. Partner and consult on projects focused on implementing clinical patient safety initiatives including, but not limited to, new processes or systems, identifying latent safety threats, troubleshooting the engagement of patients and providers in new spaces and conducting simulations to determine root cause analysis for identified quality issues. Participate in evaluation of simulation programs in accordance with best practice standards for simulation. Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, implementation and integration of simulation into existing health care curricula. Advance their own and others’ health profession knowledge and refine expertise through appropriate education and development activities and/or programs and professional affiliations staying current with national and international advances in simulation. This includes advancing the training of health professionals in simulation education and research through creation of a simulation fellowship or other opportunities.

Collaboration

Participate as a BCCH and BCW Simulation Steering Committee member, providing key strategic leadership, expert advice and counsel on a wide variety of simulation initiatives and innovations. Provide oversight in the appropriate design, development and implementation of simulation in the medical education curriculum and sub-specialty programs as outlined in the CANMEDs framework. Develop ideas for innovative research and design study protocol through collaboration-based work and identify funding sources; foster and mentor research activities utilizing simulation-based approaches at local, national and international levels. Liaise with external funding partners (BCCH and BCW Foundations, grant proposals, etc.) to seek funding for simulation program initiatives, research, equipment and capital expenses. Collaborate with provincial and regional partners in rural and remote areas of to support simulation initiatives focused on specialty populations served by BCCH and BCW.

Qualifications & Key Competencies

This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Leadership or Education (Health Professions Education, Adult Education, Education Leadership, Education Administration, or Health Care Administration), a Fellowship in Simulation, or commensurate experience in health care simulation education and/or research, in addition to a medical degree. The successful candidate will also have 3+ years of experience in a clinical health care environment with significant exposure to direct patient care and use of simulation in academic learning and quality improvement processes.

The successful candidate will also be committed to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per the Truth & Reconciliation Commission (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

Competencies

Demonstrated commitment to academic and clinical excellence as well as patient- and family-centred care; knowledge of simulation services, technologies and applications. Demonstrated trauma-informed and culturally competent approach in clinical work and professional relationships. Ability to provide coaching and leadership to influence a learning organization in accordance with strategic goals and priorities; supervise and lead staff and promote effective teamwork. Demonstrated ability to integrate knowledge of learning and adult education principles in health care education programs; to assess and implement classroom and production technologies to advance education; and to lead and mentor research methodologies and activities. Demonstrates an aptitude for progressive, innovative thinking, with strong ability to effect change and advance strategic initiatives, project planning and implementation in an inter-professional and multi-program setting. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and communicate effectively with others at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, develop revenue opportunities and market resources and services. Ability to operate related equipment including various word processing software, finance and spreadsheet programs, simulators and AV debriefing equipment.
