POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for providing support to ensure safe, effective and accurate distribution of publicly funded vaccines and medications, investigations of adverse storage conditions, and conducting cold chain maintenance inspections in accordance with all Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) standards, protocols, guidelines and objectives. Provides support in planning, organizing, developing and implementing program processes, policies and procedures. Acts as a vaccine and pharmaceutical content expert, mentor and resource. Provides guidance, training, mentoring, and coordinating, assigning, scheduling and verifying the accuracy and completion of the assigned work of staff.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensures vaccine pharmaceutical integrity and client safety, including supporting vaccine distribution activities, reviewing and auditing of vaccine orders as required. Assesses eligibility criteria and approves high-risk vaccine orders and distribution of patient-specific publicly funded vaccines. Utilizes relevant systems to forecast, order and maintain stock levels of publicly funded vaccines and oversees the return of excess and/or wasted vaccines.  Able to aseptically withdraw and administer vaccines and develop draft formulations and required labeling for the product batching of multi-dose vials of vaccines. Acts as the vaccine and pharmaceutical information specialist within the Public Health Branch and develops and maintains vaccine stability charts.  Provides clinical recommendations regarding appropriate vaccine dosing schedules. Coordinates and ensures distribution of aseptic preparation of vaccines for internal or external immunization clinics, if required. Able to utilize the refrigerated van and/or personal vehicle to ensure that vaccines are distributed in a timely manner and returned vaccines are immediately verified and reintegrated back into stock for redistribution, as appropriate. Ensures all wasted vaccines are accounted for, processed as appropriate. Coordinates vaccine recall activities are processed in accordance with established policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols. Collaborates to optimize and ensure safe, high-quality vaccine and medication management and collaborates with stakeholders to support clinical, educational, technical, research and quality assurance (QA) activities. Liaises with external and internal clients regarding vaccine inventory, storage and handling, clinical, administration and distribution updates and activities. Provides support for reporting on KPIs relating to vaccine distribution and wastage.


QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a University Degree with a Bachelor of Science or Doctorate in Pharmacy or equivalent. Successful completion of an Ontario College of Pharmacists approved course for pharmacist injection training and registered in "Find a Pharmacy or Pharmacy Professional". Active registration with good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Holds a valid certification in CPR and First Aid and a Certificate of Competency from the Pharmacy Examination Board of Canada. Sound knowledge of publicly funded vaccines, other pharmaceuticals distributed by public health and the Ontario Immunization Schedule. Understanding and knowledge of the clinical use, safety and distribution activities associated with publicly funded medications/vaccines. Sound knowledge of vaccine ordering, distribution, transportation, storage and handling conditions such as cold chain maintenance requirements. Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, protocols and guidelines. Demonstrated ability in the Region’s leadership and core competencies.
