My client is a niche environmental consulting firm focused on the areas of regulatory affairs and permitting, Indigenous engagement and relationship building, water stewardship, closure and reclamation planning, compliance and environmental management, and project management. Their primary focus in mining and mineral exploration, and they lead permitting and regulatory affairs matters for many projects. They expect to double in size over the next two years and due to their continued success and growth and a very strong and successful brand name. They operate at the intersection of industry, communities, and government, playing a crucial role in defining successful pathways for project advancement. They often act as an "owner's representative," renowned for their ability to tackle strategic, complex problems and deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions.

My client is currently in search of an Indigenous Engagement and Human Environment Specialist to provide support in delivering projects with a socio-economic and community-based focus.

Remote / WFH / Hybrid: 100% Remote anywhere in Canada

Travel: Minimal

Salary: $85k - $130k, plus health benefits, RRSP matching, annual performance bonus

Experience:

  • Assisting in the coordination of the Indigenous Engagement and Human Environment project support, staff coordination, and operational assistance. Contributing to the development and implementation of best practices and procedures for service delivery within the Indigenous Engagement and Human Environment domains.
  • Supporting various aspects of Indigenous Engagement and Human Environment services, including but not limited to:
    • Indigenous and stakeholder engagement and consultation planning, implementation, tracking and reporting, development.
    • Impact benefit negotiations.
    • Socio-cultural and socio-economic studies,including desktop research,surveys, interviews, etc.
    • Development of community based indicators.
    • Traditional Land Use and Indigenous Knowledge.
    • Assessment of project impacts on the socio-cultural and socio-economic environment, including Indigenous interests.
    • Development of impact management programs, including mitigation, benefit enhancement and monitoring programs.
    • Reconciliation Action Plans.
    • ESG Reporting.
    • Capacity Development.
  • Keeping abreast of changes to Canadian federal and provincial impact assessment legislation and practices, and stakeholder consultation best practices;
  • Providing support on the delivery of multiple projects within scope/budget/schedule expectations and apply high quality standards on project deliverables; and
  • Preparing work plans and proposals, including development of scopes and cost estimates.

Requirements:

  • 5 - 10 years of experience in Indigenous and stakeholder engagement, environmental assessments, socio-cultural and/or socio-economic baseline studies and impact assessments.
  • Knowledge of Canadian or provincial/territorial environmental impact assessment legislation and regulations (i.e., Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012); Familiarity with and sound understanding of Canadian federal and provincial environmental policy and legislation relating to the natural resource sector.
  • Experience working with natural resource extraction firms on large resource projects, such as mining, oil and gas, and/or renewable energies.
  • Experience working with proponents, government/regulators, communities and/or Indigenous organizations.
  • Knowledge of traditional land use and/or cultural impacts of resource development.
  • Project and time management skills.
  • Strong awareness and keen interest of Indigenous cultures, UNDRIP, TRC Calls to Action, decolonization practices, current legislation including the government’s duty to consult, the history of Indigenous Nations in Canada, and the legacies that continue to be impacted.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work in the field on projects as needed.
Additional skills considered an asset:
  • Knowledge of archaeology and/or cultural heritage.
  • Statistical analysis and data management experience.
  • Experience developing Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Studies.
  • Assessing and developing corporate social performance based on ESG metrics and developing social enhancement strategies, action plans, and annual reports.
  • Experience conducting technical review of impact assessment and permitting applications; and
  • Fluency in French or any Indigenous language.
