Your Opportunity:

The Calgary Ambulatory Lymphedema Service (CALS) service provides assessment and treatment for patients with non-cancer related and primary lymphedema. The CALS program uses a collaborative process to support and promote patients' functional independence and participation in life roles. The Therapy Assistant (TA) for the CALS program provides individual treatment sessions under the supervision of licensed Occupational Therapists. The TA also supports the rehab team by ordering supplies, organizing the department, and preparing therapy items. The successful candidate will have a willingness to learn new therapy skills related to the management of lymphedema, including compression wrapping of upper and lower extremities. The successful candidate will be able to apply those new skills to assist patients with self-management of their condition, such as the donning and doffing of lymphedema compression garments. The caseload for all positions within the Allied Health department may be subject to change based on operational considerations. This position is based out of the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre.

Description:

As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Diploma from a recognized Physical/Occupational Assistant program. Proficiency in English (written and verbal). Demonstrated ability to function effectively within a patient-centered, interdisciplinary team of health care professionals. Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) Level C certification. Able to work independently and within a team. Demonstrated ability in communication for effective teamwork, documentation, and client interactions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent experience working in an ambulatory rehab setting. Experience working with patients with lymphedema and/or edema management. Experience working with skin and wound care. Knowledge of the chronic disease management model of care. Experience with compression wrapping is preferred; however, orientation and training will be provided.
