Reporting to the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Supervisor, the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator will primarily be responsible for performing maintenance and repair duties on the City's  Water Distribution System. The candidate will also be required to assist the Wastewater Collection section in the performance of their duties.  The candidate will construct water mains, sewer mains and associated appurtenances. The candidate will cut and fit pipes, read and interpret drawings, and estimate the material requirements for specific jobs. The position is required to work outdoors on a daily basis. This position will be assigned to the Water Distribution Department for summer operations and to the Road Department for winter operations Wednesday-Sunday 11:00pm - 7:00am winter control shift.

Essential Qualifications

  • A Class I Water Distribution Certificate is preferred.
  • A Water Distribution Operator-In-Training Certificate is required. 
  • A Class 1 Water Distribution Certificate will be required within 12 months of obtaining the position.
  • A Class I Wastewater Collection or Operator-In-Training Licence would be considered an asset.  
  • Must be able obtain a Wastewater Collection Operator-In-Training Licence within 12 months and obtain a Wastewater Collection Licence within 24 months. 
  • Possess and maintain a Class “D” Driver's License with a “Z” endorsement.
  • Failure to obtain or maintain the required qualifications in the required timelines will result in the forfeiture of the position.

Duties

  • Carry out maintenance duties on the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems as required.
  • Perform service taps, construct, maintain and repair water mains, sewer mains and associated appurtenances.
  • Complete required paperwork and maintain daily logs.
  • Participate in peer training.
  • Carry out restoration duties according to established procedures.
  • Operate hand tools and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Operate in a safe manner and be responsible for the proper use of all assigned heavy-duty trucks and equipment
  • Operate winter control equipment
  • Perform the coupling and uncoupling of attachments as required
  • Perform pre-trip inspections on assigned equipment.
  • Plan and enact proper Traffic Control procedures and signage according to the regulations outlined in the MTO Traffic Control Manuals.
  • Adhere to all relevant health and safety policies, acts, and regulations.
  • Answer general inquiries from the public.
  • Serve as crew leader.
  • Perform other duties and may be assigned to any other shifts as required.
