WHERE: Innovation Center

As a Controls Designer in Innovation, you will develop world-class software and control systems for high performance automation equipment. This position will contribute to new and next generation products for SuperTrakTM Conveyance, Symphoni™, Analytics, Feeders, and other industry leading mechatronic technologies. The Innovation Center is an exciting venture developing state of the art technologies within a large, industry-leading, global automation supplier.

Duties include developing software requirements and controls concepts that range from rapid prototypes to production projects. You can lead and execute the software development to full integration of electrical and mechanical systems without a clear direction. You work well in an environment where you are an individual or one of the team members forging solutions that have not existed in the market.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

• Participate/lead in the concepting and requirements definition of a project with the Innovation Champions and Product Managers.
• Lead software design teams to, test, and “fail fast” to iterate through concepts
• Mentor other innovation team members to work “outside the box” and avoid limitations normal in operations projects
• Provide expert judgment and expertise in the oversight and review of software/technical projects.
• Lead technical evaluation of innovation technologies in their area of expertise, and sign off on project designs and go/no-go & pivot decisions for innovation and product development projects
• Provide innovation support to ATS Life Science’s worldwide sites.
• Provide technical assistance to the rest of the department for area of expertise.
• Improve the knowledge and capability of other members of the innovation department through mentoring.
• Participate/Lead in technical software development and implementation across all innovation teams.
• Be the ATS Innovation expert, at an industry-leading level, in one or more areas, including Automation Software Development, OT Networking and Automation Mechatronics.
• Analyzing and understanding LS industry/customer technical requirements while converging proven automation principles with new technologies and approaches. 
• These responsibilities are subject to change as a function of the individual’s abilities.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Support creation of labour, material and execution plans for innovation and product development projects.
• Support others who are deploying and testing developed systems.
• Presenting/Supporting gate proposals and costing to management for approvals.
• Lead or participate in design reviews with internal/external customers, vendors, and internal design groups.
• Collaborates with members of the Capex Engineering department and other teams to ensure a smooth introduction of innovation technologies on customer projects 
• Continuous improvement mindset.
• Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
• Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.

Additional Information

Education
• A post-secondary engineering or computer science degree, diploma or equivalent with an emphasis on software design and Integration.

General Experience

• Skilled at developing software that is efficient, elegant, robust and maintainable
• Ability to evaluate, recommend and implement new development or deployment technologies
• Strong Ability to get to root cause customer problems and deliver innovative solutions that solve them.
• Team player able to contribute in meetings, perform code reviews, brainstorm hard problems and step in and contribute when a challenge needs all hands on deck
• Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to document and explain solutions

Specific Experience

• Strong programming/software development and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with PLC programming (BnR, Siemens and Rockwell), Motion control, C/C++, .NET or similar tools
• Experience with Agile development practices.
• Familiar with issue-tracking and revision-control systems.
• Developing and executing tests to verify behavior and performance.
• Performing and accepting code reviews.
• Lead and contribute to technology development that align with technology roadmaps.
• Assisting with the generation of software related product documentation.
• Hands-on experience with lab test equipment is an asset.
• Strong understanding of automation (PLC’s, control systems, electrical/mechanical).
• Strong Mechanical and electrical aptitude – We want someone who will be hands on to solve problems.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• A self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
• 3+ years' experience related to software in an industrial automation environment
