Junior Statistical Analyst

Job Summary
The statistical analysis will work on various projects including a project in nutrition policy research that seeks to evaluate the implementation of Health Canada’s proposed Front-of-Package policy. The incumbent will contribute to the management and analysis of data, including developing data creation plans and statistical analysis plans.

Organizational Status
The statistical analyst will be physically located at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology & Evaluation (C2E2), a center within the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI). The incumbent will report to the Director, C2E2 and work with members of C2E2 and their collaborators.

Work Performed

  • performs data wrangling and statistical analyses for projects using administrative data and primary data.

  • develops detailed and thorough documentation of dataset creation and statistical programs.

  • interprets and summarizes analyses and results.

  • prepares publication-quality tables and graphs using appropriate software.

  • performs comparisons of packages within R and provides recommendations for use.

  • develops analytic templates for commonly encountered statistical analyses.

  • provides assistance with the curation of statistical programs and with data sources.

  • performs other related duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent will be accountable for timely and accurate construction of analytic datasets and performance of statistical analyses. Error would result in loss of productivity for the investigators / research teams.

Supervision Received
Oversight will be provided by the Director, C2E2 with day-to-day supervision provided by senior scientists at C2E2 and senior statistical analysts. The position requires a strong, independent work ethic and an individual who is a self-learner.

Supervision Given
The incumbent may give technical advice to students (co-op, graduate) when applicable.

Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of two years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biostatistics or other relevant discipline.

  • minimum of two years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • advanced understanding/skills in data wrangling and statistical analysis.

  • experience with construction of data creation plans and statistical analysis plans.

  • expertise with R and SAS, experience with STATA.

  • understanding of research methodology and knowledge of health administrative data.

  • experience with data linkage and analysis of large relational databases.

  • experience working within the UBC Research Data Centre (RDC) and PopDataBC.

  • ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • evidence of self-directed, self-motivated and independent research skills.

  • ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.

  • willingness to respect diverse perspective, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
