Help set the course for the future of addictions and mental health care in Alberta Recovery Alberta is now seeking an analytical, proactive problem solver for the role of General Counsel. In this role, you will provide legal and risk management expertise and leadership as we work to establish a new provincial addiction and mental health framework. As the General Counsel, you will manage the legal affairs of Recovery Alberta and provide strategic leadership and expertise to Recovery Alberta’s executive team. In this role, you will oversee a full range of legal services and provide strategic and risk management advice to Recovery Alberta. You will uphold the integrity of Recovery Alberta as an organization, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures. As the General Counsel, you will also build and maintain positive working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including government departments and officials. In this role, you will leverage these networks to achieve organizational goals and enable Recovery Alberta to fulfill its purpose, providing Albertans with the support they need for long-term recovery. Recovery Alberta is a new provincial entity that will provide comprehensive and accessible recovery-oriented mental health and addiction services and correctional health services to Albertans. A key part of Alberta’s provincial health system, Recovery Alberta knows that mental health is health and is dedicated to helping Albertans overcome their mental health and addiction challenges to enable full, healthy lives. Description:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the General Counsel is responsible for managing the legal affairs of Recovery Alberta. In this role, the General Counsel provides strategic recommendations and direction to the CEO, members of the executive team, and Board of Directors on legal matters and regulatory and statutory compliance, as well as maintain the integrity and effectiveness of organizational governance. This role acts as the key legal advisor, providing leadership as they oversee a full range of legal services and provide legal and risk management expertise and strategic advice. This includes, but is not limited to health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate/commercial matters, contractual language, privacy and freedom of information policy, legal trends, and risk. The General Counsel oversees and coordinates input from other legal advisors, including those in Alberta Health and Justice and Solicitor General, and external legal counsel as required. This position is also responsible for ensuring Recovery Alberta’s compliance with all legislative, regulatory, and applicable legal requirements, assessing legal liability and providing risk management and mitigation strategies. The General Counsel will establish and maintain positive relationships with local, provincial, and national representatives and stakeholders, including government departments and officials. This includes developing and maintaining strategic and operational working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to, the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction, elected officials, the Office of the Alberta Legislature, the Office of the Ethics Commissioner of Alberta, Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, educational institutions, auditors, and peer organizations.

Demonstrated leadership abilities, including comfort with decision-making and exercising sound legal and business judgment. Demonstrated ability for organizational planning and to develop organizational strategy.Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and manage change to achieve positive results.Ability to influence, negotiate, and mediate resolutions to complex situations.Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including interpersonal and public relations skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts and conclusions into a language applicable to the targeted audience.Proven relationship-building skills with the ability to foster partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve organizational goals.Demonstrated ability to model innovation and creativity.A proven record of engaging in ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the areas of health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate/commercial matters, contractual language, privacy and freedom of information policy, legal trends, risk, or general regulatory compliance preferred.
