Description:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the General Counsel is responsible for managing the legal affairs of Recovery Alberta. In this role, the General Counsel provides strategic recommendations and direction to the CEO, members of the executive team, and Board of Directors on legal matters and regulatory and statutory compliance, as well as maintain the integrity and effectiveness of organizational governance. This role acts as the key legal advisor, providing leadership as they oversee a full range of legal services and provide legal and risk management expertise and strategic advice. This includes, but is not limited to health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate/commercial matters, contractual language, privacy and freedom of information policy, legal trends, and risk.
The General Counsel oversees and coordinates input from other legal advisors, including those in Alberta Health and Justice and Solicitor General, and external legal counsel as required. This position is also responsible for ensuring Recovery Alberta’s compliance with all legislative, regulatory, and applicable legal requirements, assessing legal liability and providing risk management and mitigation strategies. The General Counsel will establish and maintain positive relationships with local, provincial, and national representatives and stakeholders, including government departments and officials.
Required Qualifications:
J.D. or LL. B and member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. 15+ years of legal experience, preferably in an in-house healthcare legal department or law firm supporting the healthcare sector or similarly complex service delivery environment.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Demonstrated leadership abilities, including comfort with decision-making and exercising sound legal and business judgment. Demonstrated ability for organizational planning and to develop organizational strategy. Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and manage change to achieve positive results. Ability to influence, negotiate, and mediate resolutions to complex situations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences. Proven relationship-building skills with the ability to foster partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve organizational goals. Demonstrated ability to model innovation and creativity. A proven record of engaging in ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the areas of health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate/commercial matters, contractual language, privacy and freedom of information policy, legal trends, risk, or general regulatory compliance preferred.
