Reporting to the Program Manager or delegate, the Oncology Nurse Clinician practices in accordance with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) standards of professional practice, Code of Ethics, and the established vision of BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). Coordinates care for the pediatric oncology patient and family from diagnosis, treatment, and transition to follow up. Facilitates excellence in patient care by acting as a clinical resource for nurses at BCCH as well as to community care providers around the province in the care of pediatric oncology patients. Supports nursing staff in the provision of care by using information based on specialized theory/practice, assessing clinical skills, providing formal advice to other nursing staff and/or participating in direct patient and family care as appropriate. Consults, confers, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team members, educational resources , and other health care professional/providers to achieve excellence in family centered care, education and research. The Oncology Nurse Clinician functions as the team leader of the interdisciplinary care team, consulting and collaborating with team members to ensure consistent and integrated family-centered care within BC Children’s Hospital BCCH and between BCCH and provincial partners and community agencies. 


What you’ll do

Demonstrate expertise and provide leadership in evidence based nursing practice through methods such as reviewing literature, consulting with clinical experts, evaluating clinical practice, recommending changes to existing standards and guidelines, role-modeling direct patient care skills including assessment, intervention and follow-up skills to staff/students, and providing information based on application of theories, concepts and principles in pediatric oncology nursing. Provide consultation to nursing and interdisciplinary staff to assess, plan, implement and evaluate quality family-centered care to pediatric oncology patients and families through methods such as reviewing patient/family needs and progress with staff, promoting collaboration with health care professionals, reviewing available health care provisions and discussing referral options. Provide consultation to and liaise with community partners by developing inter-agency linkages, coordinating transition of care, and communicating patient/family needs to ensure smooth and integrated care between tertiary and community centres. Participate in and promote the teaching of patients and families on supportive care, treatment effects, health maintenance and promotion strategies through methods such as developing health teaching strategies, assessing the learning needs of patients/families, teaching staff and/or patients and families, evaluating outcome of learning, and maintaining current reference material for patients and families. Coordinate and participate in quality improvement and risk management activities through methods such as evaluating effect of changes in patient care/nursing practice, and generating recommendations for alternative approaches to patient care/nursing practice. 

What you bring

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Three (3) years recent related nursing experience encompassing assessment and treatment of pediatric oncology patients, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Nursing theory and practice with a patient and family centered model of care British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards for nursing practice Evidence based nursing practice related to pediatric oncology patient care Theories and systems of family dynamics Other health care disciplines and their role in the care of pediatric oncology patients and families Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports. Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019). As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
