Assistant Managing Editor, English Service – Toronto (Internal-External)

We’re looking for an energetic leader, a passionate journalist and a creative problem-solver to become the Assistant Managing Editor, English Service, of The Canadian Press.

The Assistant Managing Editor will have a senior leadership role in all aspects of newsroom operation and work closely with the Managing Editor and the Editor-in-Chief. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with leadership experience, either as a news editor or department head, who is looking to take that next step in their career with The Canadian Press. An interest in content analytics and artificial intelligence would be an asset. The successful candidate will:

1.      Work late morning to early evening to ensure the day’s stories are properly wrapped up; co-ordinate any late-breaking news; tee up our evening, overnight and early morning coverage;

2.      Ensure that our work is of the highest quality, maintaining the standards for which CP is known;

3.      Help develop new content products and work with new platforms to contribute to the company's financial success;.

4.      Co-ordinate longer-term projects across departments and bureaus;

5.      Play a key role in identifying and recruiting journalistic talent and strengthen relationships with journalism schools across the country;

6.      Play a key role in the training and development of both new and longer-term employees.

The successful candidate will:

1.      Have supervisory or management experience, and, ideally, experience as a reporter/editor;

2.      Love to deal with people and help them continue to do good work, in a constructive, co-operative way;

3.      Have a deep understanding of the core principles of CP but also demonstrate an ability to embrace change;

4.      Be forward-looking, have an open mind and a wealth of ideas about how to keep the CP newsroom relevant and strong;

5.      Be a proven change-maker who is constantly looking at our workflows and pushing for improvements;

6.      Understand the business of CP and how the newsroom contributes to the success of the business;

7.      Be a strong communicator who likes to consult and work collaboratively.

8.      Spend the majority of their work hours in the Toronto newsroom.

Le (la) directeur(trice) de l’information adjoint(e) tiendra un rôle prépondérant dans tous les aspects des opérations de la rédaction et travaillera en étroite collaboration avec le (la) directeur(trice) de l’information et le (la) rédacteur(trice) en chef. Il s'agit d'une excellente opportunité pour une personne ayant une expérience en matière de leadership, soit comme chef des nouvelles ou chef de service, qui cherche à franchir une nouvelle étape dans sa carrière avec La Presse Canadienne. Il ou elle sera chargée de :

  1. Aider à fixer le calendrier quotidien pour tous les bureaux et sections, s’assurant que nous sommes en pleine possession de nos moyens pour remplir toutes nos tâches et que les effectifs sont déployés adéquatement;
  2. Coordonner les opérations hors des heures normales et jouer un rôle de premier plan dans la planification de la couverture du lendemain;
  3. S’assurer de la plus haute qualité de notre travail en maintenant les normes d’excellence pour lesquelles la PC est reconnue;
  4. Aider à développer de nouveaux produits de contenu qui contribueront au succès financier de la compagnie;
  5. Coordonner les projets à long terme auprès des services et des bureaux;
  6. Jouer un rôle de premier plan pour l’identification et le recrutement de journalistes de talent et renforcer les relations avec les écoles de journalisme à travers le pays;
  7. Jouer un  rôle de premier plan dans la formation et le développement des nouveaux et anciens employés.

La personne choisie devra :

  1. Avoir de l’expérience de supervision ou de gestion, et, idéalement, de l’expérience de reportage et rédaction;
  2. Aimer traiter avec les gens et les aider, en collaboration et de façon constructive, à continuer à bien faire leur travail;
  3. Avoir une connaissance approfondie des principes fondamentaux de la PC, mais démontrer  aussi une ouverture au changement;
  4. Être prospectif, avoir l’esprit ouvert et de nombreuses idées sur la façon de maintenir la rédaction de la PC pertinente, saine et vigoureuse (y compris un plan de relève et de nouvelles façons de réaliser des reportages);
  5. Être un agent de changement accompli qui constamment examine notre production et propose des améliorations;
  6. Comprendre les affaires de la PC et la façon dont la rédaction contribue au succès de l’entreprise;
  7. Être un excellent communicateur qui aime consulter et travailler en collaboration;
  8. Passer la majorité des heures de travail au sein de la salle de rédaction à Toronto.
