Canada Research Chair, Tier 2, Assistant or Associate Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (Physical Geography - Applied Atmospheric Sciences) Field of Specialization: Physical Geography - Applied Atmospheric Sciences Academic Unit: Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Category of Appointment: Preliminary (Tenure-Track)/Tenured Rank/Position Title: Canada Research Chair, Tier 2, Assistant or Associate Professor Start Date: July 1, 2027 Closing Date: Consideration of complete applications will begin on December 17, 2025 Position Overview The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) at Carleton University (Ottawa) invites applications for a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Applied Atmospheric Sciences at the Assistant or Associate level. The ideal candidate will have expertise in developing or applying atmospheric and climate models and/or integrating data products such as climate projections, numerical weather prediction outputs, and reanalysis datasets. Specializations may include downscaling and bias correction, data assimilation, and reconciling simulations with observations, to quantify climate‑driven impacts spanning atmospheric, terrestrial, or marine systems. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to build an internationally recognized research and training program, fostering equitable and inclusive collaboration, complementing and expanding existing expertise while engaging researchers and policymakers in support of climate change adaptation and assessment. Appointment is conditional on the approval of the application by the CRC Secretariat. Eligibility and Other Details Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process. Qualifications PhD in Atmospheric Science, Climatology, Geography or related field; Ability to develop and/or apply atmospheric models and their outputs to advance understanding of climate change impacts and support decisions on adaptation and assessment; Demonstrated ability or potential to develop the foundations for an externally‑funded, internationally‑recognized research program; Record of high‑quality, peer‑reviewed research and the potential to attract, mentor, and retain graduate students and other HQP; Demonstrated ability or potential to develop projects with other researchers, government, and other agencies; Demonstrated ability or potential to mobilize knowledge beyond academia, engage decision‑makers and the public; Evidence of teaching excellence and the potential to make outstanding contributions to physical geography education; Willingness to comply with the funder’s terms and conditions for research security compliance.
