Counsellor – Graduate Education, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia Job Title: Counsellor Department: Team D | Counselling Services | Student Health and Wellbeing | VP Students Salary: $7,622.83 – $11,886.67 CAD per month Posting End Date: November 13, 2025 Job End Date: November 2, 2027 Term: 2‑year, 0.8 FTE Job Summary Provides wellbeing programming and clinical services to support graduate students’ overall wellbeing and help them succeed in their respective programs. Offers single‑session short‑term counselling, triage and referral to stepped care, external resources and emergency services as appropriate. Provides consultation to faculty and staff, responds to crises, and works with the Graduate Wellbeing Coordinator to promote graduate student wellbeing across the Faculty of Medicine. Responsibilities Collaborate with the Wellbeing Coordinator, the GPE office, and relevant members across UBC (e.g., Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, UBC Health Promotion & Education, other UBC Faculties) to develop strategies and deliver workshops, outreach programs, seminars, groups, training, orientations, and other programming to promote graduate student wellbeing. Identify existing programs, resources and services relevant to graduate student wellbeing. Consider and support culturally appropriate wellbeing programming for all graduate students. Provide single‑session and brief counselling by phone, video, and in person to support students. Provide intake assessments and referral services to internal and external resources for ongoing care, consistent with the stepped‑care model. Develop and implement outreach services to ensure all UBC Faculty of Medicine graduate students in the province have access to the services provided by the GPE Office. Provide consultation and support to staff, faculty and graduate student peer leaders on trainee mental health concerns, including crises. Participate in meetings with the GPE office, Counselling Services case‑management, and administrative meetings. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client notes and forms within UBC’s policies and procedures. Travel to distributed sites (or connect virtually) to offer counselling and group support/workshops, as required. Prepare reports, publications and other documents as required; may sit on and participate as a member of GPE committees and working groups. Work closely with GPE to develop content for and promote wellbeing programming for Faculty of Medicine graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, ensuring graduate student wellbeing web resources are up to date and accurate. Flexible work hours, including evenings according to program or area needs, as required. Works in the Faculty of Medicine and provides programming elsewhere on or off‑campus as needed. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Eligible for professional certification in British Columbia. Minimum of five years of experience in clinical counselling plus experience supervising Master’s level practicum students. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field; eligible for professional certification in British Columbia. Minimum of five years of experience in Clinical Counselling. Eligible for registration as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Registered Social Worker in British Columbia, or as a Canadian Certified Counsellor. University or college counselling experience is an asset. Training and experience in single‑session, triage, stepped care, and brief therapy preferred. Commitment to serving the needs of a broadly diverse student population, with demonstrated ability to provide services responsive and sensitive to the needs of specific student populations including aboriginal students, international students, graduate students, racialised students, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ2S+ students. Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and experience in program development, consultation and outreach. Strong interest in and commitment to effective problem solving and continuous improvement of programs and services; possesses personal attributes that facilitate teamwork and the development of effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff. Appropriate coursework and training in mental health assessment, individual and group counselling; program evaluation, adolescent and adult development; learning theory; career development; cross‑cultural counselling and diversity; personality theory and diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. Knowledge of the unique issues facing university students and university life. Expertise and experience in treatment of a wide range of concerns that post‑secondary and professional programme students may experience, including stress, depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship difficulties, eating/body‑image issues, career/life planning, transition issues, and sexual violence. #J-18808-Ljbffr
