Censys’ mission is to be the one place to understand everything on the internet. Frustrated by the lack of trustworthy Internet intelligence, we set out to create the industry’s most comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date map of the Internet. Today, Censys delivers real-time Internet intelligence and actionable threat insights to global governments, over 50% of the Fortune 500, and leading threat intelligence providers worldwide. Location: This position is remote within the United States or Canada Role Summary We’re looking to hire a Senior Systems Engineer to build network and systems services that comprise the core scanning and data collection systems at Censys. Censys operates distributed infrastructure for Internet-wide scanning, bulk DNS resolution, and X.509 certificate ingestion: your job will be to go below the surface of our data, and help us build the highest quality datasets and APIs. At Censys, we believe in working iteratively, but we’re always thinking about the big picture. We’re building a platform that enables fast development of future products, and integration with new data collection methods. You’d be great for this position if you’re someone who considers not just initial development, but ongoing maintenance and monitoring. You consider delivery and developer experience, and everything you do can be built upon in the future by others. Role Responsibilities Design and build services and system software that power existing and future products at Censys by continuing to improve and expand our Internet Map. Help extend our data collection solutions by creating new or expanding existing Internet protocol scanners. Censys conducts billions of network handshakes daily. Introduce new types of Internet data and data enrichment to our Internet Map, including DNS data, parsing X.509 Certificates from CT Logs, and so forth. Focus on writing high-quality Go, but still contribute to solutions across multiple languages and codebases. Required Qualifications Thorough understanding of Internet protocols and technologies, not just how they’re used but how they work. This includes fundamentals such as TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS, etc. Ability to work on low-level systems software, operating in a Linux environment and understanding how to write software that interacts with system components such as the kernel networking stack. Proficiency with Golang Experienced with patterns for concurrency. Understanding of relational databases (e.g., Cloud Spanner, Postgres). Experience with cross-language data serialization formats, such as Protobuf Interested in solving problems, not completing tasks Ability to write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability Have strong communication skills and can explain complex technical concepts to other engineers, designers, and product managers. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity and comfort working in a Linux based environment. Experience building, deploying, and maintaining containerized services in a Kubernetes based environment. Basic understanding of design and implementation of fault-tolerant distributed systems. Familiarity with a service-oriented architecture using gRPC, but experience with any RPC IDL is a fine substitute Collaborate and communicate well with other engineers working on related systems. Enjoy technical architecture discussions and want to drive technical decisions within your team. Continually improve skills, technical approaches, and familiarity with new technologies to help contribute to the success of the team. For high cost of living areas (San Francisco Bay, New York City, and Seattle), the expected salary range for this position is $180,000 USD - $212,000 USD, plus bonus eligibility and equity.
