Planning and Development Student – Town of LaSalle, Ontario The Planning and Development Summer Student will be engaged in daily tasks supporting the Planning and Development Department to meet service delivery needs. This position will be exposed to the Planning Act application process, file organizing, research and report writing, site plan review, and support staff in the department with the completion of other activities and tasks as necessary. The Planning and Development Summer Student will report to the Manager of Planning and Development and will be involved in projects that engage various internal departments and proponents. The Planning and Development Summer Student will have opportunities to attend meetings with planning staff in a learning capacity. Requirements Employment Period: May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Assist with responding to daily enquiries via phone, counter, and email regarding planning and development matters. Provide general administrative support including photocopying, filing, responding to correspondence, researching, writing letters/reports, etc. Support planning staff with research and analysis on emerging trends, new planning requirements, and special projects. Assist with review, evaluation, and analysis required to process development applications under the Planning Act. Assist with record keeping for the Planning and Development Department. Develop and prepare mapping and illustrations. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications Must be a post‑secondary student working toward a degree/diploma in Planning, Geography, or a related program, and returning to school in September 2026. Awareness of applicable Provincial legislation, including the Ontario Planning Act and the Ontario Municipal Act. Ability to multi‑task with strong organizational and time‑management skills in a fast‑paced environment. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) for reports, documents, presentations, and data organization. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ontario Class “G2” or “G” driver’s license. Legally entitled to work in Canada. Qualifications Considered Assets Knowledge of GIS, ability to interpret aerial photos and maps, and familiarity with reading site plans. Awareness of municipal government structure, stakeholders, and basic requirements of the development review process. Ability to interpret and apply Provincial, County, and Town policies, regulations, and provisions using sound judgement in the evaluation of development applications. Knowledge of progressive planning principles, concepts, and practices for long‑range community planning objectives. Working Conditions Mostly indoors with some exposure to the outdoors. Prolonged hours sitting at a desk. Manual dexterity to use desktop computers and peripherals. Safety equipment as required. Hours of Work Primary hours: Monday to Friday, day shift (8:30 am – 4:30 pm), with some evenings for meetings, public meetings, or open houses.
