Role and Facility Information Island Health is seeking a full‑time or part‑time psychiatrist to primarily work in an outpatient setting, caring for an adult population of patients with a wide spectrum of psychiatric and substance use diagnoses. The candidate must be comfortable working with persistently mentally ill, personality disordered, and comorbid populations within a community and recovery focused program. The successful candidate would provide services at the MHSU outpatient clinic and support ACT/ACSS services in the community. Caseload is shared with the current psychiatrist, and there are currently no on‑call responsibilities after‑hours or on weekends or holidays. The suitable candidate should be flexible within a growing and changing clinical environment and comfortable with a collaborative and consultative service. Collaboration within a regional system of care includes coordination with the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Department of Psychiatry. Membership in the Central Island Division includes the option of attending Nanaimo Department of Psychiatry meetings and connecting with colleagues in Nanaimo and Parksville. Responsibilities Provide outpatient psychiatric care for adult patients with psychiatric and substance use diagnoses. Collaborate with ACT/ACSS and other community services. Participate in regional coordination and meetings. Benefits Free office space, secretary, telephone, fax, and email. Compensation and Incentives Mixed billing system with a combination of fee‑for‑service and sessional billing. Eligibility for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA): retention premium 7.98%, retention flat fee $12,367, relocation funding up to $15,000, recruitment incentive $10,000. CME benefits: $3,000 per annum for years 3–4 and $6,000 per annum after year 4. Community Information Port Alberni is a coastal city with a population of 18,000, located in the majestic Alberni Valley surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The temperate valley climate offers year‑round outdoor activities, and the city is a gateway to the Pacific Rim communities of Tofino & Ucluelet and the long beach surfing destination. It is known as the official “Ultimate Fishing Town” in Canada. The community is family‑friendly with affordable housing, strong public schools, and extensive recreational programs for children.
