Reporting to the Manager of Inuit Employment Initiatives, the Career Planning Specialist is responsible for providing information and guidance regarding choices for employment, training and career directions and support in pursuing these directions. The position improves the relevance of HR and departmental programming and the investment of managerial time in on‑the‑job development as more Inuit are focused and take ownership of their career development. It also contributes to a more stable public service with an in‑depth knowledge of Nunavut’s population and Inuit culture. Major Responsibilities Reviewing, developing and interpreting program parameters Drafting and amending program guidelines, manuals, and policies Promoting the program, preparing the semi‑annual call for proposals for clients Collaborating with the Staffing to recruit and select participants Developing and conducting orientations for participants, their managers and trainers Managing budgets (which may range from $500,000 to several million per fiscal year) and providing regular budget reports to the Manager, Inuit Employment Initiatives Assessing individual competencies and career aspirations and providing specific job or occupational options in accordance with the person’s aspirations and the government needs Making connections to the Sivuliqtiksat program to ensure that internships are suitable for the individual and recommending developmental support that contributes to attainment of the individuals’ career goals Serving on various committees responsible for providing leadership and guidance regarding Inuit training and employment initiatives and priorities Participating in job fairs and career planning events and coordinating promotional efforts to achieve the objectives of Article 23 The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Education, Native and Aboriginal Studies, or related field accompanied by a minimum of two (2) years’ related experience. Formal training as Career Development Officer would be an asset and having extensive experience in a variety of progressively responsible types of work and/or being an elder with considerable government experience would be excellent preparation for the role. The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in one or more of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross‑cultural environment are also considered assets. Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.
