R&D Manager – Toronto, Canada

Our customer, a leading CDMO providing a range of excipient solutions to a diverse range of customers across pharmaceuticals, are looking to appoint an R&D leader to manage a team of scientists driving innovation through ideation, new product development and application data development.

This is a unique role, with the successful candidate responsible for building and managing an R&D team based in Toronto, as well as leading a group based in a sister site in the US. Working as part of a global matrix structure, the R&D Manager will work closely with colleagues in RD&A, Product Management, Marketing, Operations, as well as other key stakeholders internally and externally alike.


Key responsibilities will include:

  • Directing the technical development & application activities for the full range of excipient products and associated solutions
  • Working cross functionally to drive product innovation from concept to commercialization, support cost savings initiatives and product improvement projects
  • Demonstrating subject matter expertise on relevant pharmaceutical technologies, included but not limited too excipients & coatings
  • Acting as technical authority and provide subject matter expertise in support of business and customer goals
  • Oversee, manage and support lab operations across innovation and customer sampling activities
  • Building and developing high performing teams


Interest is welcomed from individuals with a passion for innovation, research and development who have a previous track record working in an evolving environment, able to operate successfully with a degree of ambiguity and pace of change. Candidates will have a relevant level of academic qualification in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Engineering or related field, which is supplemented with a minimum of 5 years practical experience in oral solid dose coating and/or excipient formulation.

A key component of this role is the ability to create and lead a team, so previous experience doing this is needed. Having worked in a CDMO environment previously, candidates will show an ability to manage customer expectations with skill and demonstrate excellent project management ability, creativity, and problem-solving skills.


As well as having a keen eye for the technical, this is a leadership role, so candidates must posses strong communication skills, the ability influence, engage and motivate groups of people in multiple locations and from varying functions.


Candidates will need to have experience operating CRM, ERP and other software suites and the ability to travel domestically and globally when required.
