For more information about the Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas, visit Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program The AIS Program is a province‑wide program that helps prevent the introduction and spread of AIS into Alberta’s lakes, rivers, and across borders. Watercraft inspections are part of a larger province‑wide AIS Program that includes monitoring, response planning, education campaigns, and policy. The Watercraft Inspections and Decontamination Program is focused primarily along major highways in Alberta, where it is mandatory for all vehicles transporting watercraft to stop at open inspection stations. If you are comfortable approaching new people, can handle pressure well, are able to work outdoors for long hours and enjoy working with the public, this may be the job for you Responsibilities AIS Site Leads are responsible for interviewing watercraft owners, inspecting and decontaminating watercraft, and issuing Quarantine Orders as Fishery Guardians, in addition to the following: Assisting with training and mentoring of AIS Watercraft Inspectors at the inspection station and maintaining operational readiness of staff and equipment. Maintaining occupational health and safety (OH&S) documentation, leading site OH&S tailgate meetings, assisting supervisors with site‑specific hazard assessments, and ensuring that Watercraft Inspectors follow safe work procedures. Reviewing and approving schedule changes at their stations. Leading full watercraft decontaminations when AIS‑fouled watercraft are intercepted. Qualifications Minimum Requirement : A completed high diploma plus 12 months (1 year) of related experience. Additional Requirements (to be provided before start date) A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or an equivalent Canadian license. A valid Standard First Aid certificate with CPR certification. A valid Criminal Record Check. Related Experience Previous experience working at Government of Alberta watercraft inspection stations. Hands‑on mechanical experience in a workshop or field environment. Skill in operating, troubleshooting, and performing basic maintenance on high‑pressure hot water decontamination units. Proven ability to communicate effectively with members of the public in high‑pressure situations. Knowledge and practical experience with the Government of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Program. Detailed understanding of complex watercraft and their mechanical systems. Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, evening, and weekend shifts.
