The Aquatic Trainee Program is designed to support individuals who are passionate about aquatics and eager to begin a career in water safety, instruction, and community programming. If you feel most at home poolside and enjoy helping others stay safe, build confidence, and have fun in the water, this program offers an excellent pathway into the aquatic profession.

The Aquatic Trainee position prepares individuals to meet all minimum qualifications for the Aquatic Instructor Guard position. Through structured training, in-water skill development, and nationally recognized certifications, trainees gain the knowledge and experience necessary to ensure public safety and deliver aquatic programs to the community.

Upon successfully completing all program requirements, trainees are obligated to accept part-time employment as an Aquatic Instructor Guard with the Town.

100% attendance is mandatory for every scheduled training session.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Aquatic Supervisor, this position will attend and successfully complete the required courses to meet the minimum qualifications for the Instructor Guard position.

WORK RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • National Lifeguard (pool)
  • Lifesaving Swim Instructor

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in or have completed Grade 10
  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • Completion of WHMIS
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including a Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check if over 18

  • Must demonstrate fitness level /physical capabilities (as per NL requirements)
  • Must be able to perform under stressful situations and model appropriate behaviour in the aquatic environment.
  • Demonstrates a positive, collaborative, coachable attitude; willing to learn and grow.
  • Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and ownership of actions.

Hours

Able to work evenings and weekends as required.

Physical Effort

Must possess the agility, strength, and physical stamina to perform arduous and prolonged work under adverse and strenuous conditions. Frequent standing. Varying levels of physical effort, including moderate to heavy lifting, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, carrying. Operation and use of required tools and equipment skillfully and safely.

No travel required for this position.

Work Environment

Moderate exposure to an office environment, significant exposure to a recreational and/or cultural area designated for public use. Significant exposure to the public in a service provision capacity. Potential exposure to client volatility dealing with the public.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Ensure the Town of Hinton health and safety policies, procedures, directives, and safe work practices are followed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Pay: $17.56 per hour
