Canada Hostelling International Canada Full time

About HI Canada

Hostelling International Canada (HIC) is a national member based not for profit organization offering Hostelling services to members and guests across Canada. ( We are part of a global network of hostels under the Hostelling International banner where each country has its own independent national organization to advance hostelling in its territory. We currently operate 23 hostels directly and have 14 affiliate hostels as part of our network. We currently have over 14,000 members in Canada.

We believe that through hostelling, we become more conscious of the world around us; and we can even make the world a better place. Our mission is to build a community of conscious travellers who share a greater understanding of people, places and cultures through our network of hostels and people.

HIC operates under the Policy Governance model where the volunteer Board sets the high level strategic direction for the organization through the “Ends” and then monitors progress towards the achievement of these Ends. The Board’s sole employee, the CEO leads an operational team located across Canada to operationalize the Board’s vision and to deliver results.

Director Role Description

  • Directors are elected by the membership for 3-year terms and volunteer their time on the Board.

  • Work collaboratively with other Directors to create policies including Ends Policies, Executive Limitation Policies, Board self-management policies and CEO relationship policies within a Policy Governance framework.

  • Represent the interests of the membership at the Board table

  • Participate on Board committees, which include the Governance, Audit, Nominating, Ownership Linkage and CEO Relationship committees.

  • There are 3 in-person weekend Board meetings each year plus one weekend on-line meeting.

  • The average time commitment for Directors is between 10-15 hours per month over the course of the Board year but this varies from month to month

  • Travel expenses to Board meetings are reimbursed and Directors are able to book association owned hostels on a complimentary basis during their term of office.
