Your opportunity:

The CSICOMP NMR Facility houses 10 NMR spectrometers, 1 EPR spectrometer, and a variety of peripheral equipment for molecular characterization at the University of Toronto. Together with the CSICOMP Facility Staff, these spectrometers serve a robust academic and industrial client base with diverse scientific needs. Reporting to the Analytical Facility Manager, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), this position is responsible for providing support functions to the NMR facility. These supports include instrument and laboratory equipment maintenance, basic troubleshooting, training, NMR acquisition, data processing, and data analysis. The NMR Specialist also provides services for the CSICOMP NMR Facility by conducting solution state NMR, solid state NMR, and EPR experiments on a variety of organic, inorganic, polymeric and materials samples, adjusting protocols where appropriate to obtain successful analyses. Finally, the NMR Specialist is responsible for maintaining on-line facility records such as (but not limited to) instrument maintenance logs,troubleshooting notes, and sample acquisition logs while adhering to quality control procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

This successful candidate will handle and work with chemicals and cryogenics. As such, the position requires awareness of and compliance with all health and safety practices during the normal course of work. In addition, s/he must immediately report equipment malfunctions, unusual occurrences and potentially hazardous situations to the appropriate supervisor. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings
  • Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details, preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected
  • Coordinating routine maintenance of lab equipment
  • Setting-up lab/workshop according to research and/or course schedules
  • Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
  • Updating and maintaining records
  • Ordering supplies within established limits
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Analytical Chemistry or acceptable combination ofequivalent experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of recent and related experience in a chemistry teaching or research lab, providing instrument and laboratory maintenance, basic instrument troubleshooting, instrument training, data acquisition, data processing, and analysis.
  • Excellent lab equipment maintenance and troubleshooting skills are required for hardware and software related to NMR instrumentation. This includes:
  • Experience with magnet cryogen fills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with operating, maintaining, and basic troubleshooting a variety of modern NMR spectrometers and associated peripheral equipment.
  • Experience with routine and advanced experimental NMR techniques and implementation (e.g. 1D and 2D NMRtechniques for a broad range of NMR-active nuclei, variable temperature NMR, quantitative NMR, diffusion-oriented NMR spectroscopy, and basic solid and semi-solid state NMR experiments).

  • Proficiency with modern NMR instrumentation, pulse sequences and their implementation.
  • Experience conducting training sessions on NMR instrument operation.
  • Experience implementing scripts and macros.
  • Experience with standard health and safety guidelines and maintaining general orderliness in a laboratory environment.
  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency with Linux and MS Office.
  • Proficiency and advanced skills working with NMR vendor software (e.g. MNova, VnmrJ, Topspin).
  • Excellentcommunication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience, specific knowledge, and understanding of the theory and principles of NMR spectroscopy as they pertain to chemical analysis
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to maintain instrument operation by prioritizing maintenance duties and managing time efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively while under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate proficiently with a wide range of students, post-doctoral fellow (PDF) researchers, faculty, staff and other users of the lab.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must have initiative, sound judgement, diplomacy and discretion.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or hold more than 10 kg and up to 25 kg.
